The former logger, who previously ran for governor, has deep union ties, and has been endorsed by Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;(I-Vt.), won at least 148 of the 149 delegates in Cumberland County, all 44 delegates in Penobscot, and 22 of 23 in Hancock, dominating in several other counties as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of the state\u2019s counties will vote on delegates at similar meetings on Sunday, but as one election watcher said, \u201cTroy Jackson will almost certainly be the next Democratic nominee for Maine\u2019s 2026 US Senate election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gavinbena\/status\/2078642123683844329?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2078642123683844329%7Ctwgr%5Efd5d7e8030972cedde28f011d390fea19186b86a%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fmaine-senate-troy-jackson\">https:\/\/x.com\/gavinbena\/status\/2078642123683844329?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2078642123683844329%7Ctwgr%5Efd5d7e8030972cedde28f011d390fea19186b86a%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fmaine-senate-troy-jackson<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson appeared confident enough in Saturday\u2019s results to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/19\/us\/politics\/maine-democrats-senate-jackson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announce<\/a>&nbsp;a celebratory tailgate planned for Sunday in York County as voters there would be selecting delegates. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/maine\">Maine<\/a>&nbsp;State Nurses Association also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BenKail\/status\/2078828895877357861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;its endorsement of the candidate on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Saturday\u2019s county meetings, Jackson addressed some of his supporters virtually, giving his volunteer network credit for quickly organizing on his behalf after many had previously expected to be campaigning for Platner, who spent nearly a year mobilizing Mainers from across the political spectrum with a platform focused on taxing billionaires, ending US \u201cforever wars\u201d and military aid for Israel, and passing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare-for-all\">Medicare for All<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you how much I appreciate all the hard, hard work. I\u2019ve been getting text messages all day about what a great job I did. I didn\u2019t do a goddamn thing, all of you just smoked it,\u201d said Jackson in a video posted on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s really, really incredible, so thank you so much. We\u2019re well on our way to getting the government that we fucking deserve, and that\u2019s what I\u2019m excited about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We&#39;re well on our way to getting the government that we deserve. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pP1HDr9RKF\">pic.twitter.com\/pP1HDr9RKF<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Troy Jackson (@TroyJackson207) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TroyJackson207\/status\/2078644700697788457?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 19, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized volunteers attended some of the county conventions, some wearing \u201cJackson for Maine\u201d t-shirts leftover from the candidate\u2019s gubernatorial run and passing out flyers with the names of the pro-Jackson delegate slate\u2014supporters whom volunteers had spent the past week calling to secure their commitment to the progressive candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eight remaining counties will select 181 more delegates on Sunday. Another 101 Democratic state committee members have already been chosen to attend the statewide convention on July 25. Together they make up the 601 delegates who will vote for the party\u2019s nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The party\u2019s nominee will face five-term Republican Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/susan-collins\">Susan Collins<\/a>, whom Jackson has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/susan-collins-ice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">condemned<\/a>&nbsp;in recent days for voting to fund US&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/immigration\">Immigration<\/a>&nbsp;and Customs Enforcement, which he has called to abolish. An ICE agent fatally shot 25-year-old Johan Sebasti\u00e1n Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A poll by Wedgewood earlier this month&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/troy-jacksons-chances-against-collins-as-he-leads-race-to-replace-platner-12215327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a>&nbsp;Jackson leading Collins in a hypothetical matchup, 48-43, with 9% of voters undecided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of Saturday\u2019s meetings, Jackson addressed a crowd of about 100 supporters in Portland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m running for the logger in Allagash who does not think that anyone in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/washington\">Washington<\/a>&nbsp;knows about them,\u201d said Jackson. \u201cI\u2019m running for the nurse that\u2019s working another double shift because their hospital is understaffed, and all the while billionaires and massive corporations are making record profits, buying influence in Washington, and telling the rest of us that there is just nothing that we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m asking for your vote, but I\u2019m also asking for more than that,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019m asking you to organize&#8230; I\u2019m asking you to talk to your neighbors.
