That is what this election is about.<br><br>A billionaire class which has already\u2014and there are\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BPZ9NSar4d\">pic.twitter.com\/BPZ9NSar4d<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Acyn (@Acyn) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Acyn\/status\/2078607672375742746?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 18, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The final weeks of the primary, in which Michigan voters will go to the polls on August 4, have been marked by reports of massive outside spending in favor of Stevens and against El-Sayed, who has made the refrain, \u201cMoney out of politics, money in your pocket, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare\">Medicare<\/a>&nbsp;for All\u201d the central message of his campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Common Dreams&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/el-sayed-stevens-campaign-finance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;last week, El-Sayed led the way in fundraising in the second quarter of 2026, bringing in $4.6 million while Stevens raised $2.2 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Federal Election Commission (FEC)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/campaign-finance\">campaign finance<\/a>&nbsp;filings showed that outside spending by people and groups supporting Stevens has soared to an estimated $50 million, according to an analysis by Punchbowl News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMore than half of the total ($28.4 million) is coming from United&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/democracy\">Democracy<\/a>&nbsp;Project (UDP),\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/allymutnick\/status\/2077081612949311767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;congressional reporter Ally Mutnick, referring to the super political action committee (PAC) affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/aipac\">AIPAC<\/a>), which has also backed the vehemently pro-Israel Stevens in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UDP acknowledged last week that it had spent nearly $15 million on the Michigan Senate primary race so far, including $9.3 million in support of Stevens and $5.7 million against El-Sayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El-Sayed is a strong supporter of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/palestinian-rights\">Palestinian rights<\/a>&nbsp;and\u2014like a growing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/democratic-voters-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">majority<\/a>&nbsp;of Democratic voters after more than two years of Israel\u2019s assault on Gaza\u2014has called for the US to end military aid to Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent weeks he has responded to reporters\u2019 frequent questions on his views about whether Israel has a \u201cright to exist,\u201d by\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/citationsneeded.medium.com\/news-brief-why-us-media-has-evoked-israels-right-to-exist-1-001-times-vs-only-6-for-palestine-c5964d88b4ca\" target=\"_blank\">asking<\/a>\u00a0whether\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/palestine\">Palestine<\/a>\u00a0has a right to exist and, in a Sunday interview with CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper, saying that a more pertinent question for American voters is whether Israel has \u201ca right to our tax dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Does Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed think there\u2019s room in the Democratic Party for both supporters and opponents of Israel?<br><br>EL-SAYED: \u201cThere&#39;s always room in the tent for folks. I&#39;m for equal rights to peace, dignity, and self-determination.\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Amfvsnmx6J\">pic.twitter.com\/Amfvsnmx6J<\/a><\/p>&mdash; State of the Union (@CNNSOTU) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CNNSOTU\/status\/2078846672063320531?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 19, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the rally on Saturday night, Sanders said that AIPAC\u2019s focus on funding Stevens\u2019 campaign \u201chas everything to do with the fact that they understand that Abdul and I, and the vast majority of the American people, want a foreign policy that is based on morality and decency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an election that will show the nation whether\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/aipac\">AIPAC<\/a>\u00a0and other billionaire-funded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/super-pacs\">super PACs<\/a>\u00a0can spend tens and tens and tens of millions of dollars to buy a US Senate seat, or whether, within a corrupt campaign finance system, the voices of ordinary Americans\u2014the people of Michigan\u2014can prevail,\u201d said Sanders. \u201cThat is what this campaign is all about. In fact, people all over the world are watching what\u2019s going on here in Michigan.<br><br>And the answer is that this is an election that will show the nation whether AIPAC and other billionaire-funded super PACs can spend tens\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ALMk10YzJu\">pic.twitter.com\/ALMk10YzJu<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Acyn (@Acyn) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Acyn\/status\/2078605595704479822?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 18, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez noted that the contest between El-Sayed and Stevens comes as Americans are struggling to afford groceries, gas, and other essentials while President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;continues his war against Iran,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-americans-financial-situations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dismisses<\/a>&nbsp;working families\u2019 financial struggles, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-daycare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insists<\/a>&nbsp;the federal government cannot afford to provide universal public services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen the stakes are so high, when more people than ever are living so close to the bone, eventually we have to ask ourselves: Is the answer to our problems to turn to the same playbook over and over again?\u201d said Ocasio-Cortez. \u201cA playbook that says, in order to win, Democrats must rely on the same dark money\u2014$50 million and counting\u2014from the same people who backed 35 election deniers to Congress who voted to overturn the 2020 election?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe Michiganders\u2014Democrats,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>, and independents\u2014believe that good leadership swings for the fences,\u201d said the congresswoman, who has been named as a potential presidential or US Senate candidate in 2028. \u201cGood leadership gets big money out of our system. It takes on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/corruption\">corruption<\/a>\u00a0that blocks commonsense solutions that lift working people. We know how this works. There\u2019s $50 million in this race because they\u2019re expecting a return. It\u2019s an investment&#8230; So we can choose that or we can choose Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/united-states\">United States<\/a>&nbsp;Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday, as El-Sayed and his high-profile supporters in Congress prepared to rally more voters in Grand Rapids and Lansing, CNN&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AlexThomp\/status\/2078814079305580689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that House Minority Leader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/hakeem-jeffries\">Hakeem Jeffries<\/a>&nbsp;(D-NY) and Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) had confronted Sanders in a phone call, complaining about his \u201cmeddling\u201d in primary elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe candidates we are supporting are candidates who are representing working people, and I think it\u2019s a long time overdue for the Democratic Party to stop worrying about their wealthy campaign funders and start worrying about the needs of working people,\u201d Sanders&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/InsidePolitics\/status\/2078830585976365224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CNN correspondent Seung Min Kim suggested that Stevens is seen by Democratic leaders as a safer bet to win the general election in Michigan in a crucial election year. But recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/democratic-voters-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">polls<\/a>&nbsp;have shown her views on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/israel-us-voters-poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Israel<\/a>&nbsp;and her support from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/democrats-could-never-support-aipac-candidate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AIPAC<\/a>, as well as her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/michigan-senate-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donations<\/a>&nbsp;from the for-profit health insurance industry and her opposition to Medicare for All, could harm, not help, Stevens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with big spending from the pro-Israel lobby, the primary race has been characterized in recent weeks by El-Sayed\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/el-sayed-stevens-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">call<\/a>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>&nbsp;users to refrain from mocking and making personal attacks against Stevens and to focus instead on the issues at the center of the campaign, as well as recent Islamophobic vitriol against El-Sayed, including from Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/john-fetterman\">John Fetterman<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Penn.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fetterman told Fox News Saturday that El-Sayed is \u201cessentially, a pro-Hamas candidate that\u2019s been anti-American and deeply anti-Israel,\u201d adding that \u201c44% of Muslims, you know, they have positive views of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/hamas\">Hamas<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalist Prem Thakker of Zeteo News&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/prem_thakker\/status\/2078567963095912602\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a>&nbsp;on Stevens to \u201ccondemn this racist and Islamophobic rhetoric coming from your allies,\u201d as El-Sayed had earlier called for civility from his own supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El-Sayed pointed to the recent attacks at the rally, saying his opponents \u201chave taken to calling me \u2018dangerous.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re a worker who wants our economy to work for you, I\u2019m not dangerous,\u201d said El-Sayed. \u201cIf you\u2019re someone sitting in medical debt, wondering what your financial future is because you deigned to see a doctor in the richest, most powerful country in the world, if you\u2019re that person, I\u2019m not dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">El-Sayed: They\u2019ve taken to calling me dangerous.<br><br>If you\u2019re a worker who wants our economy to work for you, I\u2019m not dangerous.<br><br>If you\u2019re AIPAC and want to send our money abroad, you damn well better believe I\u2019m dangerous.<br><br>If you\u2019re Chuck Schumer and want to keep doling out\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S7HhzThsST\">pic.twitter.com\/S7HhzThsST<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Acyn (@Acyn) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Acyn\/status\/2078617918875820241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 18, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut if you\u2019re Blue Cross Blue Shield shareholders, yep, I\u2019m dangerous!\u201d he added. \u201cIf you\u2019re AIPAC and want to send our money abroad, you damn well better believe I\u2019m dangerous.
