Johan Sebast\u00edan Guerrero was killed in front of his partner and his toddler,\u201d LULAC CEO Juan Proa\u00f1o said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/330-communities-nationwide-gather-for-vigils-for-lorenzo-johan-and-all-lives-taken-by-ice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cICE has now taken the lives of immigrants and US citizens alike, and if they can kill Lorenzo and Johan, they can kill anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, vigils honored the immigrants killed by ICE, as well as Renee Good and Alex Pretti, two US citizens fatally shot by Department of Homeland Security agents in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey weren\u2019t doing anything wrong. They were trying to help their neighbors, simple as that,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kare11.com\/article\/news\/local\/ice-in-minnesota\/alex-pretti-6-months-vigil-ice\/89-373055c1-dba0-47d5-a6d3-64f80ab952d9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Lisa Erbes of Indivisible Twin Cities. \u201cThey were legally observing what ICE was doing, and they were both killed for it, and that could have happened to me. It could have happened to probably every single person who is here right now. Any of us could have been Renee or Alex.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This weekend marked six months since Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, was shot by US Customs and Border Protection agents in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo one has been held accountable, no apologies, not a single phone call from any governmental official, hospital personnel, or the police,\u201d Susan Pretti, Alex\u2019s mother,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MeidasTouch\/status\/2081032232329003105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;Saturday on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSix months of pain, a roller-coaster of trauma over and over,\u201d she added. \u201cI wonder how to move forward. Will I ever get over this loss and this pain? Will I ever be able to enjoy life again?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DbOzRO9DBZq\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==\">https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DbOzRO9DBZq\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Chicago\u2014where Trump deployed hundreds of federal enforcers during Operation Midway Blitz\u2014at least hundreds of people gathered in Grant Park and marched down Michigan Avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s collective trauma that impacted our communities that no one can understand unless you were here and felt the helicopters and saw the unpredictability of neighbors getting snatched off the streets,\u201d 46-year-old demonstrator Melody Rose of Rogers Park&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/07\/25\/hundreds-march-to-trump-tower-vigil-for-ice-killings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the Chicago Tribune. \u201cAll of us, especially those who have been directly impacted and seen what that\u2019s like, have to keep showing up and spreading the word because this isn\u2019t over and it could be us any day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United Church of Rogers Park pastor Rev. Hannah Kardon told Chicago rallygoers: \u201cRemember the dead and demand the kind of world where we never would have lost them in the first place. It\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/fascism\">fascism<\/a>,\u201d she added. \u201cAnybody who cares about humanity should care about what\u2019s happening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 100 protesters rallied outside ICE\u2019s downtown Atlanta field office, including Gail Maclin, who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantanewsfirst.com\/2026\/07\/26\/nearly-100-gather-outside-atlanta-ice-office-vigil-call-due-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;Atlanta News First that her Senegalese husband is among the 675,000 people forcibly deported during Trump\u2019s second term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI lost my housing. I\u2019ve lost my car. I\u2019ve lost all my worldly possessions,\u201d she said. \u201cI still have Amari, but Amari\u2019s not here\u2014he\u2019s in Senegal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the approximately 150 people who attended a vigil in the Silicon Valley city of Mountain View\u2014headquarters of Google, where workers have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/08\/15\/we-refuse-be-complicit-google-employees-protest-proposed-contract-ice-and-cbp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protested<\/a>&nbsp;the company\u2019s complicity in Trump\u2019s deadly crackdown\u2014were members of the Raging Grannies, a longtime activist group known for their protest songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople are being targeted here, and are afraid,\u201d Raging Granny Ruth Robertson\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/mountain-view-ice-shootings-july-vigil\/\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a>\u00a0CBS News Bay Area. \u201cThey\u2019re afraid to go out of their houses, they\u2019re afraid to go to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Community members in Houston held an &quot;ICE Out&quot; demonstration and vigil for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebastian Guerrero. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GXy8WvClzt\">pic.twitter.com\/GXy8WvClzt<\/a><\/p>&mdash; News 4 San Antonio (@News4SA) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/News4SA\/status\/2081424711133630738?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 26, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A crowd of demonstrators gathered for a roadside vigil along Route 29 in Centreville,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/virginia\">Virginia<\/a>, a suburb of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/washington\">Washington<\/a>, DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rev. David Miller of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/local\/vigils-held-across-the-dmv-for-people-killed-during-ice-encounters\/4134383\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;protesters: \u201cI think that there is a moral obligation for us to speak up about our values. These values are not being represented well by this administration and certainly not by the way that ICE has been acting in our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Julio Hernandez, the director of the Congregation Action Network, told Centreville vigilgoers that \u201cwe\u2019re here to tell the story of our community being terrorized and torn apart, families being separated,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/children\">children<\/a>&nbsp;living in fear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re here to ask the community to be aware of what\u2019s happening and also asking ICE to get out of our communities,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
