Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) in the race between her and progressive former&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/public-health\">public health<\/a>&nbsp;official Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/us-senate\">US Senate<\/a>&nbsp;race, Tuesday will be \u201cthe culmination of one of the most heated and expensive Democratic Senate primaries in history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Democratic establishment threw everything it had at Abdul El-Sayed,\u201d said Pfeiffer. \u201cIf he wins, the reverberations will be felt far outside of Michigan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Michigan Senate race is arguably the most high-profile race taking place Tuesday, but in a number of House districts in the state and elsewhere, progressives are vying for seats in Congress in hopes of increasing the number of Democrats who would use their power to advocate for programs like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare-for-all\">Medicare for All<\/a>&nbsp;and universal childcare and against massive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pentagon\">Pentagon<\/a>&nbsp;budgets and US aid to Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key races include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">State Rep. Donavan McKinney (D-11) vs. US Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/donavan-mckinney-michigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">McKinney<\/a>, a former labor organizer, is running to unseat Thanedar in the state\u2019s 13th District, and recently notched endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America and Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.). Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;(I-Vt.) and Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/rashida-tlaib\">Rashida Tlaib<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Mich.) have also thrown their support behind McKinney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state lawmaker\u2019s website&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.donavanforcongress.com\/priorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">states<\/a>&nbsp;that he is running \u201cbecause I\u2019ve lived through the same bull**** as you my whole life, right here at home in Detroit.\u201d He calls his city \u201cthe poster child for communities in need of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/green-new-deal\">Green New Deal<\/a>,\u201d pointing to lead-polluted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/water\">water<\/a>&nbsp;and \u201csome of the most polluted air in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has also pushed to ban utility monopolies and government contractors, calling Thanedar \u201cour multimillionaire congressman who bought this seat with his own money,\u201d and had pledged to defeat \u201cthe corporate and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/right-wing\">right-wing<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/super-pacs\">super PACs<\/a>&nbsp;that will spend millions to support\u201d Thanedar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/article\/campaigns\/thanedar-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to<\/a>&nbsp;Punchbowl News, Thanedar is \u201cheavily self-funding\u201d his campaign and, along with the pro-cryptocurrency group Protect Progress, has spent $4.6 million on TV ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McKinney has also pointed to Thanedar\u2019s campaign funding from Detroit\u2019s unpopular energy utility company, DTE, and from AIPAC.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/07\/17\/shri-thanedar-crypto-donavan-mckinney-michigan-aipac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to<\/a>&nbsp;The Intercept, \u201ctwo-thirds of the money Thanedar raised in the last quarter came from AIPAC, which collects money from multiple donors and funnels it to the pro-Israel group\u2019s preferred candidates&#8230; Less than a quarter of those donors listed Michigan as their state of residence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanedar \u201cwas in the minority of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/house-democrats\">House Democrats<\/a>&nbsp;who voted against cutting $3.3 billion in military aid to Israel from a State Department spending bill\u201d last month, The Intercept added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his \u201cclosing message\u201d on Tuesday, McKinney told radio show host Dean Obeidallah that he doesn\u2019t \u201chave any special interests pulling the strings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy special interest is the people of the mighty 13th District, and instead of continuing to send our taxpayer money to fund\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/genocide\">genocide<\/a>\u00a0and send it for bombs and weapons to kill families and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/children\">children<\/a>, or to start wars in Iran and spend over $1 billion a day on average, my focus is going to be taking those resources, our taxpayer money, and bringing it back home for people who need it the most,\u201d said McKinney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As Michigan heads to the polls, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DonavanMI13?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DonavanMI13<\/a> gave <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DeanObeidallah?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DeanObeidallah<\/a> his closing message, that he&#39;ll be a fighter for his district. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7VofIpa6tz\">pic.twitter.com\/7VofIpa6tz<\/a><\/p>&mdash; SiriusXMProg.bsky.social (@SiriusXMProg) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SiriusXMProg\/status\/2084663032483856669?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 4, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><\/strong>Organizer William Lawrence vs. Retired Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam vs. Former US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawrence has also been endorsed by Sanders, Tlaib, and a number of progressive groups in his race in the state\u2019s 7th District, where he and the two moderate candidates seek to oust US Rep. Tom Barrett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/polls\/michigan-us-house-7-polls-2026.html?eafs_enabled=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">polls<\/a>&nbsp;have shown the progressive co-founder of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/sunrise-movement\">Sunrise Movement<\/a>&nbsp;in the lead by as many as six percentage points, but other recent surveys have shown Brink in the lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawrence has touted his energetic grassroots campaign, announcing on Monday that 864 volunteers had knocked on 100,000 doors in the district, which includes Lansing and the surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yesterday we knocked our 100,000th door. President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;has demanded a deregulated approach, and people in towns and cities across the country have rallied against the facilities, arguing the massive water and energy consumption of data centers makes them undesirable additions to their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawrence has joined Sanders and US Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a>&nbsp;(D-NY) in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/ai-data-center-moratorium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calling<\/a>&nbsp;for a nationwide moratorium on the construction of new data centers. In one campaign ad he was seen at a farm, saying, \u201cTech billionaires want to turn this field into a massive data center that\u2019ll jack up our energy bills and ruin our home values&#8230; I\u2019m running for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/us-congress\">U.S. Congress<\/a>&nbsp;because I\u2019ve never been afraid to stand up to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/corporate-power\">corporate power<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some in the Democratic establishment attacked Lawrence recently over comments he made in 2024 in which he said older Black leaders in the party have worked to defang \u201cthe white left.\u201d He apologized for the remark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a rally ahead of the primary, Lawrence told supporters that the campaign has \u201ccontinued climbing\u201d despite the attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s because there are real human beings in this campaign who are having real conversations, and that is cutting through the lies and the bullshit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our campaign has continued to surge despite the millions of dollars in attacks misrepresenting my record.<br><br>We&#39;ve built real relationships with our neighbors that the dark money outsiders can&#39;t buy with lies.<br><br>Our movement is ready to weather these smears from the GOP and beat\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sNgaoXYMBz\">pic.twitter.com\/sNgaoXYMBz<\/a><\/p>&mdash; William Lawrence (@WeWill2026) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WeWill2026\/status\/2084396362490323201?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 3, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">El-Sayed vs. Stevens<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In the state\u2019s most closely-watched race, El-Sayed has taken direct aim at Stevens for benefiting from tens of millions of dollars in AIPAC money as he has run on the slogan, \u201cMoney out of politics, money in your pocket, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare\">Medicare<\/a>&nbsp;for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stevens has been endorsed by Senate Minority Leader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/chuck-schumer\">Chuck Schumer<\/a>&nbsp;(D-NY), who has come under fire this election cycle for other endorsements including that of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/maine\">Maine<\/a>&nbsp;Gov. Janet Mills in the New England state\u2019s Senate race, with progressives arguing Schumer has backed establishment candidates and ignored the energy around Medicare for All, taxing billionaires, and ending aid for Israel among the party\u2019s base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben Rhodes, another former Obama staffer,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/brhodes\/status\/2084464697147904021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Monday that the party leadership \u201cdecided to back Haley Stevens in part out of fear of Abdul and the future he represents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El-Sayed is an outspoken advocate for Medicare for All, but Stevens has appeared eager to center his identity as a Muslim American in the race,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/abdul-el-sayed-polls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joining<\/a>&nbsp;the centrist think tank Third Way in attacking him for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/abdul-el-sayed-polling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaigning<\/a>&nbsp;with commentator Hasan Piker, an outspoken critic of Israel, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/haley-stevens-michigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claiming<\/a>&nbsp;last week that El-Sayed wants \u201cto blame all of [his] problems on Jewish Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latter comment was widely condemned as \u201crace-baiting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El-Sayed closed his primary campaign out Tuesday with an ad featuring several of his high-profile endorsers as well as grassroots supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to talk about who we are and affirm what we\u2019re willing to fight for, and that\u2019s exactly why this movement is resonating with so many,\u201d said Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/ayanna-pressley\">Ayanna Pressley<\/a>\u00a0(D-Mass.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Time to vote, Michigan! Wesley Bell<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In Missouri\u2019s 1st District in St. Louis, former US Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/cori-bush\">Cori Bush<\/a>&nbsp;is running for a second time against Rep. Wesley Bell, who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/cori-bush-running-for-congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defeated<\/a>&nbsp;her in the 2024 primary after nearly two-thirds of his campaign funding came from the United&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/democracy\">Democracy<\/a>&nbsp;Project (UDP), a super political action committee affiliated with AIPAC. The group allocated more than $100 million toward defeating candidates that supported&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/palestinian-rights\">Palestinian rights<\/a>&nbsp;and opposed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/us-military\">US military<\/a>&nbsp;funding for Israel that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bush&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/04\/cori-bush-wesley-bell-aipac-primary-01022866\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;Politico recently that this year\u2019s election is no different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of us is of the people, by the people, and for the people,\u201d Bush said in a recent interview. \u201cThe other one is paid for by AIPAC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to AdImpact, UDP has again&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/08\/01\/missouri-cori-bush-wesley-bell-primary-aipac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent<\/a>&nbsp;more than $3 million on advertising in the primary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Bell has a clear financial advantage, he lacks the \u201cgrassroots army\u201d Bush has, The Intercept recently reported, as well as voter engagement. The former county prosecutor has not shown up to several candidate forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Polling in the race has been scarce; a survey&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/polls\/missouri-us-house-1-polls-2026.html?eafs_enabled=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a>&nbsp;in February that was sponsored by Bush\u2019s campaign showed Bell ahead by four points, with 17% of respondents undecided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jessica Montgomery, co-chair of the St. Louis DSA chapter,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/08\/01\/missouri-cori-bush-wesley-bell-primary-aipac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;The Intercept that voters in St. Louis are likely to show \u201cbuyer\u2019s remorse\u201d regarding Bell in Tuesday\u2019s election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He voted along with 74 other Democrats to \u201cthank\u201d US&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/immigration\">Immigration<\/a>&nbsp;and Customs Enforcement in June 2025, when Trump was beginning his violent mass deportation campaign<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of very progressive voters in St. Louis who don\u2019t like the fact that he voted to thank ICE,\u201d Montgomery told the outlet. \u201cI think they want someone who will be more adversarial and will fight back against the Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bush\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CoriBush\/status\/2084363214268006622\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>\u00a0Monday that her opponent \u201cis backed by billionaires, MAGA money, and AIPAC.
