overwhelming support of the Democratic Party base?\u201d asked one labor movement veteran, citing a new poll showing 90% of the party want lawmakers to focus on passing universal Leader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/hakeem-jeffries\">Hakeem Jeffries<\/a>&nbsp;of New York sparked fresh outrage Sunday by saying he does not currently support&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare-for-all\">Medicare for All<\/a>&nbsp;legislation in Congress, a damning admission at a time when party voters\u2014clamoring for bolder positions from leadership and a willingness to fight for the working class\u2014are overwhelming in favor of proposals that would provide universal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/healthcare\">healthcare<\/a>&nbsp;coverage for every person in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/united-states\">United States<\/a>&nbsp;at a lower cost than the current system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing on Sunday\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d Jeffries was asked by host Kristen Welker\u2014who noted his previous backing of such proposals from 2013 to 2021\u2014if he would put&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare\">Medicare<\/a>&nbsp;for All legislation in the House up for a vote if Democrat\u2019s win back the majority in November, Jeffries first tried to dodge the question by putting his focus on the shortcomings of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>, who gutted have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicaid\">Medicaid<\/a>&nbsp;and attacked Affordable critics, who quickly pointed out that a new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/cms\/prod_cms_alt\/file\/2026\/08\/16\/2379b719-cb05-4aea-87fd-f27467e6c7ae\/cbsnews_20260816_sun.pdf?ref=levernews.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS\/YouGov poll<\/a>&nbsp;released Sunday showed\u2014as survey after survey has also documented\u2014that&nbsp;hunger for Medicare for All among Democratic voters is remarkably high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Common Dreams&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/medicare-for-all-savings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;last week, a recent Yale University study found that Medicare for All, as drafted in a bill by Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;(I-Vt.), would save over 114,000 lives annually and $1 trillion per year in US healthcare spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the poll, conducted between Aug. 12-14, a full 90% of Democratic voters said they would \u201clike to see the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/democratic-party\">Democratic Party<\/a>&nbsp;focus on plans for passing Medicare for All,\u201d compared to just 10% who said it should not be a focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/image.png?id=67633297&amp;width=1400&amp;quality=70\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA reminder that the vast majority of Democrats across the country support Medicare for All,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mehdirhasan\/status\/2089013176318804033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;progressive journalist Mehdi Hasan in response to Jeffries\u2019 answer on the question. \u201cThis man is so out of touch with his party. Similarly, when it came to economic issues, voters\u2014by a 68% to 29% margin\u2014said they\u2019d prefer \u201cbig or fundamental changes in policies and approach, even if they are harder to do\u201d compared to those who wanted \u201csmaller or incremental changes to policies and approach, that might be easier to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/poll-results.png?id=67633314&amp;width=1400&amp;quality=70\" alt=\"Poll results\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing after Jeffries on \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/ro-khanna\">Ro Khanna<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Calif.), a top ally of Sanders and a current co-sponsor of the Medicare for All Bill introduced earlier this year in the House, disagreed with the Minority Leader\u2019s position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMedicare for All is arguably the most important priority,\u201d Khanna said. \u201cIt would save money, and it would save lives. Look, there was just a Yale study that came out. It would save $1 trillion in terms of costs, in terms of health care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked by Welker if he was \u201cdisappointed\u201d in Jeffries\u2019 remarks, Khanna said that while \u201cI respect the difference\u201d of opinion, \u201cI will say this: it needs to have a vote on the House floor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe majority of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/house-democrats\">House Democrats<\/a>\u00a0are going to support it,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt is one of the most important policies if you actually believe in saving lives and in helping increase wages for working-class Americans. You talk to folks, and they\u2019ll say, \u2018The biggest thing that pushes me into bankruptcy is if someone gets cancer. And I can\u2019t afford the bills.\u2019 And even people who have insurance, look at how many premiums have been increasing. This would save money for ordinary Americans. And it would increase their wages.
