Democratic House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries<\/a> of New York sparked fresh outrage Sunday by saying he does not currently support Medicare for All<\/a> legislation in Congress, a damning admission at a time when party voters\u2014clamoring for bolder positions from leadership and a willingness to fight for the working class\u2014are overwhelming in favor of proposals that would provide universal healthcare<\/a> coverage for every person in the United States<\/a> at a lower cost than the current system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appearing on Sunday\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d Jeffries was asked by host Kristen Welker\u2014who noted his previous backing of such proposals from 2013 to 2021\u2014if he would put Medicare<\/a> for All legislation in the House up for a vote if Democrat\u2019s win back the majority in November, Jeffries first tried to dodge the question by putting his focus on the shortcomings of the Republicans<\/a>, who gutted have Medicaid<\/a> and attacked Affordable Healthcare Act subsidies during President Donald Trump\u2019s second term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But pressed by Welker if he \u201cpersonally\u201d supports Medicare for All at this time, Jeffries said, \u201cNo,\u201d explaining that \u201cit\u2019s not legislation that I currently am co-sponsoring or that I support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
