US President Donald Trump<\/a> has spent his second term threatening<\/a> takeovers of various other countries, from Canada<\/a> and Cuba<\/a> to Greenland<\/a>, and on Monday he shared<\/a> on social media<\/a> a map that fueled fresh fears of his imperialist \u201cDonroe Doctrine<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map on Trump\u2019s Truth Social platform shows the US flag over not only the United States<\/a> but also Canada, Greenland<\/a>, Iceland, Mexico, and multiple countries in Central America<\/a> and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The post was swiftly condemned across platforms, with Congressman Jonathan Jackson (D-Ill.)\u00a0declaring<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthis is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalist Stephen Robinson wrote<\/a> on X that \u201canother world leader posting something like this would have to apologize before their immediate removal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amy McGrath, a retired Marine fighter pilot and former<\/a> Democratic US Senate<\/a> candidate from Kentucky, wondered<\/a>, \u201cWhat would we do and say if the Chinese president posted a map of China taking over the Western Pacific?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carl Bildt, co-chair of the European Council on Foreign Relations and former prime minister of Sweden<\/a>, similarly said<\/a>: \u201cWhat would happen if Xi Jinping posted a map where [China] has taken over all of East Asia, and [President Vladimir] Putin one of [Russia] having absorbed all of Western Europe? It would have been seen as either insane or dangerous\u2014or both.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some critics called Trump \u201cabsolutely bonkers<\/a>\u201d and \u201cf*cking insane,\u201d Dr. Brian Goldman, a Canadian emergency physician who\u2019s also an author and broadcaster, asserted<\/a>: \u201cThat\u2019s not insanity. That\u2019s intention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic strategist Michelle Kinney agreed, saying<\/a>: \u201cAs always, he is telling us what the plan is. We must take it seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Melanie D\u2019Arrigo, executive director of the Campaign for New York Health, suggested<\/a> that \u201cthe reason why Republicans<\/a> attack education is so that people don\u2019t recognize the history that repeats itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without directly mentioning Trump or his map, Mexican President Sheinbaum said<\/a> in Spanish on Monday, \u201cWe reaffirm that Mexico is neither nor will be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country. Proudly we are a free, independent, and sovereign nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Trump is a prolific poster, the map followed a series of posts from Sunday\u2014including other maps and images produced with artificial intelligence\u2014that led progressive influencer Harry Sisson to conclude that the president was \u201chaving a mental health episode online\u201d and call for his removal from office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis man is unwell. 25th Amendment NOW,\u201d Sisson said<\/a>, cataloging posts on a range of topics, from Trump\u2019s recent renaming<\/a> of Lake Ontario amid tough<\/a> trade<\/a> talks with Canada, to the suggestion that New Mexico should be dubbed \u201cNew America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latter was ripped<\/a> by several Democratic officials, including New Mexico\u2019s governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, who responded that her state\u2019s name \u201cisn\u2019t up for debate\u2014it\u2019s been ours since before the United States existed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is up for debate? Who\u2019s showing up for working families,\u201d she continued. \u201cWhile the president tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran, gas prices keep soaring. Americans are also spending more at the grocery store, losing access to healthcare<\/a> and wondering if they\u2019ll ever be able to afford a home. Under Democratic leadership here in New Mexico, we\u2019re providing families with free childcare and college, protecting access to healthcare, and investing in housing. While the White House<\/a> wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo M\u00e9xico is busy doing the work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to waging an illegal war on Iran, Trump this term has invaded Venezuela<\/a> to abduct<\/a> President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and take<\/a> control of the country\u2019s oil<\/a> reserves, become<\/a> the US commander-in-chief to bomb the most countries, and killed<\/a> over 225 people by blowing up boats allegedly smuggling drugs through international waters. He\u2019s also threatened to seize<\/a> the Panama Canal and possibly attack nations including Colombia<\/a> and Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Iran has responded to Trump\u2019s war by restricting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the president has teased declaring<\/a> the key waterway a US territory and naming<\/a> it after himself. He\u2019s also dubbed<\/a> the Gulf of Mexico \u201cthe Gulf of America\u201d and fought<\/a> to put his name on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington<\/a>, DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the US midterm elections<\/a> less than two months away, some Democrats in Congress have stepped up their critiques of Trump\u2019s foreign policy\u2014including a delegation of progressive congressional lawmakers and candidates who headed to Uruguay<\/a> last month for the third Pan-American Congress<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after that gathering, delegation member Congressman Jes\u00fas \u201cChuy\u201d Garc\u00eda (D-Ill.)\u00a0stressed<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cprogressives<\/a>\u00a0reject the violent, imperialistic Donroe Doctrine, and believe in a foreign policy rooted in cooperation, diplomacy, and sovereign equality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
