Bernie Sanders Reintroduces The &quot;Medicare For All Act&quot;\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/health-insurance-costs-surge\">\u2018Utterly Unsustainable\u2019: Employer-Sponsored Healthcare Costs Set to Keep Surging<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warren Gunnels, staff director for Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;(I-Vt.)\u2014the leading&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare\">Medicare<\/a>&nbsp;for All champion in Congress\u2014derided Trump\u2019s promise by comparing it to other campaign pledges that have not materialized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah, just like we got a $2,000 tariff refund, a 10% cap on credit card interest rates, a 500% cut in prescription\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/drug-prices\">drug prices<\/a>, $2 gas, oh wait\u2026what?\u201d Gunnels\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GunnelsWarren\/status\/2097887112137740711\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;Here is my promise, if the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the U.S Senate, both of them&#8230;because of our tremendous strength and success economically I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.&quot; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Iy7OVq5vpk\">pic.twitter.com\/Iy7OVq5vpk<\/a><\/p>&mdash; CSPAN (@cspan) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cspan\/status\/2097875194736005331?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 10, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s midterm pledge came days after he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-medicare-for-all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responded dismissively<\/a>&nbsp;to a reporter\u2019s question about Medicare for All, which would provide every person in the US with comprehensive health coverage at a lower cost overall than the current, privatized system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president falsely claimed that a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/single-payer\">single-payer<\/a>&nbsp;system would cost \u201cthe entire budget of the whole country.\u201d But a recent study by researchers at Yale University&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/medicare-for-all-savings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">estimated<\/a>&nbsp;that Medicare for All would save the US roughly $1 trillion per year in national&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/healthcare\">healthcare<\/a>&nbsp;expenditures while also saving more than 114,000 lives annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-daycare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggested<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this year that the federal government can\u2019t afford to pay for childcare and other programs because \u201cwe\u2019re fighting wars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jec.senate.gov\/public\/_cache\/files\/e0629bb1-cf6d-4efa-a096-073a0ac73dd2\/us-inflation-fact-sheet-july-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis<\/a>&nbsp;by the Joint Economic Committee found that the average household in the US has had to pay an additional $3,800 on energy and other essentials since the start of Trump\u2019s second term, in part due to the president\u2019s decision to launch an illegal war on Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Watson School of International and Public Affairs at Brown University\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/oil-price-over-100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">estimates<\/a>\u00a0that Trump\u2019s war on Iran has cost US consumers over $102 billion extra, combined, on gas and diesel fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
