News outlets, alarmed by the trend, have kept a running tally of states with anti-dissent laws in the works. Common Dreams\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/04\/02\/un-americans-right-protest-grave-danger-under-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported in April<\/a>\u00a0that the number had reached 19, up from 10 in January. Now,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/republicans-launch-the-biggest-protest-crackdown-since-the-civil-rights-era\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a>\u00a0The Daily Beast, 20 states are in the process of attempting to suppress peaceful resistance.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In North Dakota, several measures were passed during protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, one of which\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/north-dakota-bill-aimed-at-standing-rock-protest\/410860535\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">makes it illegal<\/a>for demonstrators to cover their faces.<\/li>\n<li>Missouri, Washington, Georgia, Nebraska, and Montana\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/politics\/ditch-the-guy-fawkes-mask-new-bill-would-outlaw-masks-and-hoods-at-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are considering<\/a>\u00a0similar laws.<\/li>\n<li>In Minnesota, a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.revisor.mn.gov\/bills\/text.php?number=HF322&amp;version=0&amp;session=ls90&amp;session_year=2017&amp;session_number=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pending bill<\/a>\u00a0would allow a state or local government to bring a civil action against people &#8216;convicted of participating in an unlawful assembly&#8217; in order to recover &#8216;public safety response costs,'&#8221; according to Vox.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;North Dakota, Tennessee and Florida have submitted bills immunizing motorists who strike a protester if a demonstration obstructs traffic,&#8221; USA Today\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2017\/05\/12\/protests-pain-need\/101594318\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In Wisconsin, a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/2017\/related\/proposals\/ab299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed bill<\/a>\u00a0would punish &#8220;anyone under the jurisdiction of the institution who engages in violent, abusive, indecent, profane, boisterous, obscene, unreasonably loud, or other disorderly conduct that interferes with the free expression of others.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>North Carolina State Senator Dan Bishop has vowed to introduce\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/politics-government\/state-politics\/article128185274.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation<\/a>\u00a0that would criminalize heckling.<\/li>\n<li>Iowa and Mississippi have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/02\/us\/when-does-protest-cross-a-line-some-states-aim-to-toughen-laws.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed bills<\/a>\u00a0that would make &#8220;blocking high-speed roads a felony.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With such measures proliferating across the U.S., the United Nations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/04\/02\/un-americans-right-protest-grave-danger-under-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemned<\/a>\u00a0the trend as both &#8220;alarming and undemocratic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In my dozen years of monitoring state legislation, I\u2019ve certainly not seen a wave of anti-protest bills this large,&#8221; Lee Rowland, an attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), recently told the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>Attempts to crackdown on dissent have also begun to affect the work of the national press. In a move that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/06\/13\/gop-faces-swift-backlash-over-disturbing-press-crackdown-senate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sparked immediate outrage<\/a>, Senate Republicans last week announced new rules making it difficult for reporters to interview lawmakers in the hallways of the Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the White House\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/19\/media\/white-house-press-briefing-donald-trump-media\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">barred reporters<\/a>\u00a0from making audio or video recordings of the daily press briefing, prompting an indignant reaction from CNN&#8217;s Jim Acosta, who\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/tv\/news\/jim-acosta-says-white-house-is-stonewalling-1202470936\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deemed it<\/a>\u00a0deliberate &#8220;suppression of information.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chase Iron Eyes, an activist and member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/02\/us\/when-does-protest-cross-a-line-some-states-aim-to-toughen-laws.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently characterized<\/a>\u00a0the White House&#8217;s anti-dissent posture, as well as Republican efforts to criminalize protest, as an attempt to &#8220;send chilling effects&#8221; and delegitimize activists engaged in non-violent resistance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The state will try to devise ways to squash opposition and chill the will of people who are willing to face risks to their liberty to further their cause,&#8221;
