Antifa<\/b>\u00a0is a radical political movement of autonomous, self-styled\u00a0<\/span>anti-fascist<\/a>\u00a0groups, including in the\u00a0<\/span>United States<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/sup><\/sup><\/sup>They have been described as being left wing to far-left.<\/span><\/sup><\/sup>\u00a0The salient feature of self-described antifa groups is to oppose\u00a0<\/span>fascism<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>direct action<\/a>, including violence if need be.<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Antifa groups tend to be\u00a0<\/span>anti-government<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>anti-capitalist<\/a>;<\/span><\/sup>its adherents are mostly\u00a0<\/span>socialists<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>anarchists<\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span>communists<\/a>\u00a0who, according to Mark Bray, a historian at Dartmouth College and author of\u00a0<\/span>Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook<\/i>, \u201creject turning to the police or the state to halt the advance of white supremacy. Instead they advocate popular opposition to fascism as we witnessed in\u00a0<\/span>Charlottesville<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/sup><\/div>\n

According to\u00a0The Economist<\/a><\/i>, the “word\u00a0Antifa<\/a>\u00a0has its roots in\u00a0Anti-Fascist Action<\/a>, a name taken up by European political movements in the 1930s” which was revived in the 1990s, particularly in Germany.<\/sup><\/sup>\u00a0Peter Beinart<\/a>\u00a0writes that “in the late \u201980s, left-wing\u00a0punk<\/a>\u00a0fans in the United States began following suit, though they initially called their groups\u00a0Anti-Racist Action<\/a>, on the theory that Americans would be more familiar with fighting racism than fascism.”<\/sup>\u00a0Antifa groups are known for militant protest tactics, including property damage and physical violence.<\/sup><\/sup><\/sup><\/sup>\u00a0Antifa focuses more on fighting far-right ideology directly than on encouraging pro-left policy.<\/sup><\/p>\n

The American Antifa traces its ideological lineage to both Germany\u00a0<\/sup>and the British\u00a0Battle of Cable Street<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The first group described as Antifa was the\u00a0Antifaschistische Aktion<\/a>\u00a0which formed on July 10, 1932<\/sup>\u00a0by the\u00a0Communist Party of Germany<\/a>.<\/sup>\u00a0Anti-fascists were involved in battles against\u00a0Benito Mussolini<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Blackshirts<\/a>,\u00a0Adolf Hitler<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Brownshirts<\/a>,\u00a0Francisco Franco<\/a>‘s nationalist army, and\u00a0Oswald Mosley<\/a>‘s\u00a0British Union of Fascists<\/a>. Outside of Europe, anti-fascist tactics were used as a model for anti-Japanese resistance in occupied-China during World War II.<\/sup><\/sup><\/p>\n

Anti-Racist Action<\/a>\u00a0(ARA), which came from the\u00a0punk<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0skinhead<\/a>\u00a0scene of the late ’80s,\u00a0<\/sup><\/sup>is the main precursor of many if not most contemporary US antifa groups. Other antifa groups in the US have other genealogies. In\u00a0Minneapolis, Minnesota<\/a>, a group called the Baldies formed in 1987 with the intent to fight\u00a0neo-Nazi<\/a>\u00a0groups directly.<\/sup><\/p>\n
