(Photo:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/fccdotgov\/13959900047\/\">FCC<\/a>\/Flickr)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p>In &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/press\/press-releases\/fcc-vote-kneecaps-local-media-by-clearing-way-for-massive-mergers-like-sinclair-tribune.html\">an awful new low<\/a>&#8221; that elicited warnings about &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepress.net\/press-release\/108420\/massive-handouts-sinclair-fcc-clears-path-new-wave-media-consolidation\">a new wave of media consolidation<\/a>,&#8221; the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Thursday rolled back media ownership regulations under the guise of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FCC\/status\/931234219988324353\">trying<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;to modernize its broadcast ownership rules &amp; to help promote ownership diversity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any pretense that this vote will help journalism or increase ownership diversity is cynical and offensive,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/2017\/11\/16\/massive-handouts-sinclair-fcc-clears-path-new-wave-media-consolidation\">said<\/a>\u00a0Free Press president and CEO Craig Aaron, warning that the move will &#8220;lead to more mergers, more layoffs, and more communities that have no news outlets in place to cover important stories and hold officials accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In response to Thursday&#8217;s move by the FCC, Aaron&#8217;s group vowed to fight the decision and initiated a campaign to file suit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The FCC just wiped away time-tested and common sense safeguards that promote vibrant local media by ensuring voters have access to competing sources of news,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/press\/press-releases\/fcc-vote-kneecaps-local-media-by-clearing-way-for-massive-mergers-like-sinclair-tribune.html\">said<\/a>\u00a0Michael Copps, a former FCC commissioner and current special adviser for Common Cause. &#8220;There is no credible rationale for this odious decision which runs flagrantly afoul of the public interest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The approved\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/transition.fcc.gov\/Daily_Releases\/Daily_Business\/2017\/db1026\/DOC-347453A1.pdf\">order<\/a>\u00a0(pdf):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eliminates newspaper\/broadcast and radio\/television cross-ownership rules, which imposed restrictions on owning multiple media outlets in the same market;<\/li>\n<li>Relaxes rules about local television ownership\u2014including joint sales agreements, which allow a company to control news operations at several stations in one market, where stations would typically compete against each other; and<\/li>\n<li>Formally requests &#8220;comment on how to design and implement&#8221; an FCC diversity incubator program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Similar to the FCC decision last month to revise rules about local studio ownership\u2014which was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/10\/26\/death-sentence-local-media-warnings-fcc-pushes-change-benefit-right-wing-media-giant\">called<\/a>\u00a0a &#8220;death sentence for local media&#8221;\u2014critics charge that the rollback is just the latest &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepress.net\/press-release\/108420\/massive-handouts-sinclair-fcc-clears-path-new-wave-media-consolidation\">massive handout<\/a>&#8221; large media companies, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/sinclair-broadcasting\">Sinclair Broadcast Group<\/a>, a major conservative broadcasting company with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/08\/14\/dems-demand-answers-about-fccs-apparent-favoritism-toward-sinclair\">widely reported<\/a>\u00a0ties to Trump-appointed FCC Chairman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/ajit-pai\">Ajit Pai<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new rules are expected to help Sinclair move forward with a proposed a $3.9 billion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/transaction\/sinclair-tribune\">merger<\/a>\u00a0with Tribune Media, which would enable the company to reach\u00a0<a>72 percent<\/a>\u00a0of the U.S. population.
