and the\u00a0<em>NYT<\/em>\u00a0having no Sanders backers on staff.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Adam Johnson, media analyst<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh, except when it comes to one small matter: capitalism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we are pro-capitalism,&#8221; Bennet said, according to the\u00a0<em>Huffington Post<\/em>, which was given a video of the meeting. &#8220;The\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0is in favor of capitalism because it has been the greatest engine of, it&#8217;s been the greatest anti-poverty program and engine of progress that we&#8217;ve seen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After taking a few moments to insist that the\u00a0<em>Times\u00a0<\/em>&#8220;is\u00a0very concerned with fairness&#8221; and outlining what the\u00a0<em>Huffington Post<\/em>&#8216;s Ashley Feinberg described as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/new-york-times-opinion-james-bennet_us_5a8db27de4b0273053a70f47\">an ideology of no ideology<\/a>,&#8221; Bennet went on to express support for a lower corporate tax rate\u2014one of the central components of the tax bill President Donald Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/12\/22\/corporations-are-literally-going-wild-says-trump-he-signs-tax-bill-most-americans\">signed into law last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"block-inject-9\" class=\"block-inject block-inject-9\">\n<div id=\"block-block-58\" class=\"block block--block block--block-58\">\n<div class=\"block__content\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clearfix\"><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;In thinking about, for example, the tax bill in this and that, you know, we actually like the idea of reducing corporate rates,&#8221; Bennet said. &#8220;We&#8217;re not for taxation for purposes of taxation, but we are very concerned about fairness and equitable distribution. And it&#8217;s sort of wrestling with the, with the tensions there is, I think, how we come out where we do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bennet&#8217;s remarks came as he was facing intense criticism\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2018\/02\/new-york-times-op-ed-crisis-james-bennet\">both internally and externally<\/a>\u2014for bringing on right-wing climate denier Bret Stephens as a full-time columnist.<\/p>\n<p>While Bennet insisted during the December meeting the Stephens hire demonstrates the paper&#8217;s commitment to ideological diversity, one\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>employee called that expressed commitment into doubt by highlighting the fact that the paper doesn&#8217;t have a &#8220;strong advocate&#8221; for Sen.
