(AP Photo\/Mike McCarn)<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body e-content\">\n<h4 class=\"article-deck entry-summary p-summary\">The Seahawks may still consider bringing in Kaepernick for a visit as the team explores options at backup quarterback but needs assurances that he is committed to football.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"article-share vertical\" data-utm=\"article_left_1.1\">\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p><i class=\"icon-facebook large\"><\/i><i class=\"icon-mail large\"><\/i><i class=\"icon-twitter large\"><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-byline\">\n<div class=\"byline-text single_author\"><span class=\"byline-copy\">By\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"p-author h-card hcard url fn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/author\/bob-condotta\/\" rel=\"author\">Bob Condotta<\/a>, Seattle Times staff reporter<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-content\" class=\"article-content entry-content\">\n<p>The Seahawks were ready to bring in former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick for a workout Monday as they search for a backup to Russell Wilson but postponed the meeting when he said he did not know what his plan is for his off-field social activism going forward, including whether he would continue to kneel for the national anthem.<\/p>\n<p>The news was first<a class=\"content-link external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AdamSchefter\/status\/984483763882283009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0Thursday by ESPN\u2019s Adam Schefter and later confirmed by the Times.<\/p>\n<p>A source told the Times that the Seahawks asked Kaepernick what his plans would be for his off-field activities if he were to play football in 2018 and that Kaepernick \u2014 who kneeled for the anthem during his most recent season in the NFL with the 49ers in 2016 \u2014 said he didn\u2019t know. The Seahawks were said to want a firmer plan from Kaepernick about all of his off-field activities \u2014 including but not solely limited to kneeling for the anthem \u2014 and how that might impact football.<\/p>\n<p>The Seahawks reportedly made the request of Kaepernick late last week after initially setting up the visit with Kaepernick roughly two weeks ago.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article-aside show-desktop\">\n<div class=\"module story-list related-stories\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>With Kaepernick saying he was unclear of his future off-field plans, the Seahawks then decided to postpone the trip for now so that coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider could further discuss the situation, but left the door open that Kaepernick could still be considered and brought in for a visit.<\/p>\n<p>However, several national reports \u2014 including ESPN and\u00a0<a class=\"content-link external\" href=\"http:\/\/profootballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2018\/04\/12\/kaepernick-workout-planned-for-two-weeks-was-scrapped-at-the-eleventh-hour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pro Football Talk<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 stated that the workout was postponed solely because Kaepernick said he would not commit to standing for the anthem.<\/p>\n<p>That led to a perception that Kaepernick\u2019s side was offering one version of what happened \u2014 that the visit was postponed solely because he would not commit to not kneeling for the anthem \u2014 while the team was offering a version that kneeling for the anthem was only one aspect of the equation.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, what is clear is that the Seahawks had a definite plan to talk to Kaepernick about being the team\u2019s backup and that now it\u2019s unclear if any further conversation will happen.<\/p>\n<p>ESPN\u00a0<a class=\"content-link external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/23135580\/seattle-seahawks-postpone-visit-colin-kaepernick-say-stop-kneeling-anthem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported\u00a0<\/a>that the Seahawks \u201ccontacted Kaepernick about two weeks ago to arrange a visit to the team\u2019s headquarters, but after tentative arrangements were made and travel planned, the trip was unexpectedly scuttled over the Seahawks\u2019 last-minute stipulation regarding Kaepernick\u2019s anthem stance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ESPN reported the Seahawks made arrangements for the visit with Kaepernick the day before Kapernick sat for his deposition administered by NFL attorneys in New York regarding the league\u2019s alleged attempts to conspire to keep him out of the league. Seahawks owner Paul Allen is\u00a0<a class=\"content-link external\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/buzz-swirls-colin-kaepernick-seahawks-cowboys-jerry-jones-deposed-grievance-case-191600966.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">among those\u00a0<\/a>who is still scheduled to be deposed in the hearings, according to Yahoo.com.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of what happens with Kaepernick, the Seahawks will are expected to continue to pursue other options at backup quarterback, as well \u2014 Seattle has only Wilson on its roster at quarterback after\u00a0<a class=\"content-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/sports\/seahawks\/report-seahawks-backup-qb-trevone-boykin-accused-of-assaulting-girlfriend\/\">releasing<\/a>\u00a0Trevone Boykin last month after he was arrested in Texas on suspicion of domestic violence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"userMessagingInset\" class=\"user-messaging animate loaded\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"NewsletterSignupInset\">\n<form id=\"signupForm\" class=\"form\" action=\"https:\/\/secure.seattletimes.com\/api\/newsletter-signup\" method=\"POST\">\n<div class=\"button-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Seattle also brought in Kaepernick for a visit last May after which Carroll\u00a0<a class=\"content-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/sports\/seahawks\/pete-carroll-says-seahawks-not-signing-colin-kaepernick-now-but-door-remains-open\/\">said<\/a>the team did not sign him due in part because \u201che\u2019s a starter in this league and I can\u2019t imagine \u2014 we have a starter. But he\u2019s a starter in this league and I can\u2019t imagine somebody won\u2019t give him a chance to play.\u2019\u2019 Seattle eventually signed Austin Davis as its backup in 2017. Davis, who played just five snaps last season, remains a free agent.<\/p>\n<p>Under Carroll, the Seahawks have been regarded as being as supportive of players\u2019 social stances and on- and off-field activities as any team in the NFL. Carroll publicly supported the decision of Michael Bennett to sit for the anthem last season (with Bennett often joined by most of the rest of the defensive line). Carroll also\u00a0<a class=\"content-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/sports\/seahawks\/seahawks-respond-to-president-trump-comments-these-issues-need-to-come-to-the-forefront\/\">supported<\/a>\u00a0the team\u2019s decision to stay in the locker room for the anthem before a game at Tennessee when the players wanted to make a statement following tweets and statements from President Donald Trump criticizing players who did not stand for the anthem.<\/p>\n<p>But Carroll also said at the end of last season that he thought some of the off-field activities took a toll on the team\u2019s performance on the field, especially the 33-27 loss at Tennessee following a day of meetings to discuss what the team should do in reaction to Trump\u2019s comments, and seemed to hint that he hoped the team would be more focused on football in 2018. Since then, the team has traded Bennett to Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, I think it had an effect in the game that week in Tennessee, yeah I really do think it had an effect,\u201d Carroll said in his season-ending press conference on Jan. 2. \u201cI think it had an effect on a lot of teams and a lot of players. It was an extraordinarily heated time. I think that was a different amount of emotional output that occurred before the game. It looked like it the way we played; it looked like it took its toll, and we had gone through the whole process in doing what we did. We needed to do it, and we couldn\u2019t avoid it. We had to face it and we had to deal with it, and the other team called us up and said \u2018What are you guys going to do,\u2019 and they said \u2018Ok, we\u2019ll do that, too.\u2019 I don\u2019t know if they went through the same process that we went through or not, I don\u2019t know, but I know we did. Honestly, if I could\u2019ve done something about it I would\u2019ve. I don\u2019t think that there was anything but needing to face it; it\u2019s too real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did find out during the course of the year that guys didn\u2019t want to stay on the topic. It was too draining and it was too deep and I hope in the off-season, guys can come back around to find what they want to work at and learn and grow with, but it was draining. It\u2019s a real-life discussion that we\u2019re talking about here when we\u2019re talking about inequality and justice and stuff like that. There\u2019s real-life stuff here that needs to be talked about and needs to continue to be connected with, but in the course of a football season and all of those factors that contributed to keeping that alive, some came from across the country, and some came right internally from the locker room, and it was all over the place. It was taxing; and I think it is something to not be forgotten about this football season. I think it was part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaepernick did not play in 2017 after spending the 2011-16 seasons on the roster of the 49ers. He led San Francisco to the Super Bowl following the 2012 season and then to the NFC title game following the 2013 season when the Seahawks beat San Francisco 23-17 at CenturyLink Field when Richard Sherman tipped a Kaepernick pass into the hands of Malcolm Smith for a game-clinching interception in the final seconds.<\/p>\n<p>The visit with Seattle last May is the only reported visit Kaepernick has had with an NFL team since he\u00a0<a class=\"content-link external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/18796373\/colin-kaepernick-san-francisco-49ers-opts-contract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opted out<\/a>\u00a0of his contract in March, 2017, a move he made knowing the team was going to release him, which allowed him to hit free agency earlier.
