The Zeitgeist Movement<\/b>\u00a0is a\u00a0non-profit organization<\/a>\u00a0established in the United States in 2008 by\u00a0Peter Joseph<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The organization advocates a transformation of society and its\u00a0economic system<\/a>\u00a0to a non-monetary system based on resource allocation and\u00a0environmentalism<\/a>.[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Overview<\/span><\/h2>\n

In 2007 Peter Joseph produced and self-financed a live\u00a0performance art<\/a>\u00a0piece which ran for six nights in lower Manhattan that he entitled “Zeitgeist”. According to Joseph in an interview in 2012, he was surprised after a version he made of this performance (Zeitgeist: The Movie<\/i>), the first film in the Zeitgeist film series, went viral on\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0with millions of views.[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The Zeitgeist Movement was formed in 2008[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0by Joseph shortly after the late 2008 release of\u00a0Zeitgeist: Addendum<\/a><\/i>, the second film in the\u00a0‘Zeitgeist’ film series<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup>The ideas were based on the\u00a0Venus Project<\/a>, a societal model created by\u00a0social engineer<\/a>\u00a0Jacque Fresco<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup>[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In the Venus Project, machines control government and industry and safeguard resources using an\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0“earthwide autonomic sensor system”, a super-brain connected to all human knowledge.[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

In its first year, the movement described itself as “the\u00a0activist<\/a>\u00a0arm of\u00a0the Venus Project<\/a>.”[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In April 2011, partnership between the two groups ended in an apparent power struggle, with Joseph commenting, “Without [the Zeitgeist Movement], [the Venus Project] doesn\u2019t exist \u2013 it has nothing but ideas and has no viable method to bring it to light.”[8]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In an interview, Fresco said that although the Zeitgeist Movement wanted to act as the ‘activist arm’ of Venus project, Joseph never clarified what that would entail, and Fresco’s ideas of how to change society were not followed. As a result, Fresco withdrew participation in the Zeitgeist Movement.[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The group is critical of market\u00a0capitalism<\/a>, describing it as structurally corrupt and wasteful of resources. According to\u00a0The Daily Telegraph<\/a><\/i>, the group dismisses historic religious concepts as misleading, and embraces sustainable\u00a0ecology<\/a>\u00a0and scientific administration of society.[14]<\/a><\/sup>[15]<\/a><\/sup>[16]<\/a><\/sup>[17]<\/a><\/sup>[18]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The first Zeitgeist documentary which predates the organization Zeitgeist movement, borrowed from the works of\u00a0Eustace Mullins<\/a>,\u00a0Lyndon LaRouche<\/a>, and Austin radio host\u00a0Alex Jones<\/a>. Much of its footage was taken directly from Alex Jones documentaries,[19]<\/a><\/sup>such as his documentary\u00a0Terrorstorm<\/a><\/i>.[20]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

VC Reporter’s<\/i>\u00a0Shane Cohn summarized the movement’s charter as: “Our greatest social problems are the direct results of our economic system”.[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
