According to Joseph in an interview in 2012, he was surprised after a version he made of this performance (<i>Zeitgeist: The Movie<\/i>), the first film in the Zeitgeist film series, went viral on\u00a0<a title=\"Social media\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_media\">social media<\/a>\u00a0with millions of views.<sup id=\"cite_ref-JoeRoganExperience173_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-JoeRoganExperience173-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The Zeitgeist Movement was formed in 2008<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0by Joseph shortly after the late 2008 release of\u00a0<i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Zeitgeist: Addendum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zeitgeist:_Addendum\">Zeitgeist: Addendum<\/a><\/i>, the second film in the\u00a0<a title=\"Zeitgeist (film series)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zeitgeist_(film_series)\">&#8216;Zeitgeist&#8217; film series<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-o3_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-o3-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-v2_9-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-v2-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup>The ideas were based on the\u00a0<a title=\"Jacque Fresco\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacque_Fresco#The_Venus_Project_and_later_career\">Venus Project<\/a>, a societal model created by\u00a0<a title=\"Social engineering (political science)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_engineering_(political_science)\">social engineer<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Jacque Fresco\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacque_Fresco\">Jacque Fresco<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-o3_8-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-o3-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-socialeng_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-socialeng-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In the Venus Project, machines control government and industry and safeguard resources using an\u00a0<a title=\"Artificial intelligence\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artificial_intelligence\">artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;earthwide autonomic sensor system&#8221;, a super-brain connected to all human knowledge.<sup id=\"cite_ref-h6_11-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-h6-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In its first year, the movement described itself as &#8220;the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Activist\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Activist\">activist<\/a>\u00a0arm of\u00a0<a title=\"Jacque Fresco\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacque_Fresco#The_Venus_Project_and_later_career\">the Venus Project<\/a>.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-h11_12-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-h11-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In April 2011, partnership between the two groups ended in an apparent power struggle, with Joseph commenting, &#8220;Without [the Zeitgeist Movement], [the Venus Project] doesn\u2019t exist \u2013 it has nothing but ideas and has no viable method to bring it to light.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-o3_8-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-o3-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In an interview, Fresco said that although the Zeitgeist Movement wanted to act as the &#8216;activist arm&#8217; of Venus project, Joseph never clarified what that would entail, and Fresco&#8217;s ideas of how to change society were not followed. As a result, Fresco withdrew participation in the Zeitgeist Movement.<sup id=\"cite_ref-13\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The group is critical of market\u00a0<a title=\"Capitalism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capitalism\">capitalism<\/a>, describing it as structurally corrupt and wasteful of resources. According to\u00a0<i><a title=\"The Daily Telegraph\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Daily_Telegraph\">The Daily Telegraph<\/a><\/i>, the group dismisses historic religious concepts as misleading, and embraces sustainable\u00a0<a title=\"Ecology\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecology\">ecology<\/a>\u00a0and scientific administration of society.<sup id=\"cite_ref-t9_14-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-t9-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-pia14_15-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-pia14-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-m15_16-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-m15-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-g16_17-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-g16-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-p17_18-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zeitgeist_Movement#cite_note-p17-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The first Zeitgeist documentary which predates the organization Zeitgeist movement, borrowed from the works of\u00a0<a title=\"Eustace Mullins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eustace_Mullins\">Eustace Mullins<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Lyndon LaRouche\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lyndon_LaRouche\">Lyndon LaRouche<\/a>, and Austin radio host\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Alex Jones (radio host)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alex_Jones_(radio_host)\">Alex Jones<\/a>.
