The law of the strongest? Pressure from only one side? No!&#8221; exhorted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/emmanuel-Macron\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Macron<\/a>. &#8220;We know that Iran was on a nuclear military path but what stopped it? The 2015 Vienna accord,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The French president\u2019s defense of the Iran nuclear deal came shortly after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20180925-live-usa-trump-macron-73rd-un-general-assembly-meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump blasted what he called the \u201chorrible\u201d agreement<\/a>, which was signed in the Austrian capital Vienna by his predecessor, Barack Obama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In his address to the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/donald-Trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump<\/a>\u00a0hailed his decision to pull out of the deal and claimed that \u201cso many countries in the Middle East strongly supported my decision to withdraw from that horrible deal\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">While Macron did not name his US counterpart during his address, the focus of his speech \u2013 including highlighting the dangers of unilateralism that helped lead to the birth of the UN \u2013 centred on international dialogue and cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Noting that \u201cnationalism always leads to defeat&#8221;, Macron urged his fellow world leaders not to \u201caccept our history unraveling\u201d, adding: \u201cOur children are watching.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-material  orientation-center\" data-bo-type=\"em\" data-bo-nid=\"WB5950356-F24-EN-20180925\">\n<div class=\"hd\">\n<h5 class=\"default-header-2\">WATCH MACRON&#8217;S FULL SPEECH AT THE UN<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">No alternative to two-state solution<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">While Trump \u2013 a staunch Israel supporter &#8212; did not mention the Palestinian quest for statehood, Macron underscored that a two-state solution was the only way to resolve the longstanding crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;What can resolve the crisis between Israel and Palestine?\u201d asked Macron. \u201cNot unilateral initiatives, nor trampling on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to legitimate peace. There is no credible alternative to the two-state solution.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In a swipe at Trump\u2019s stated allegiance to his Middle East ally, Saudi Arabia\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<span lang=\"EN-US\">and the Gulf kingdom\u2019s own opposition to the 2015 Iran deal\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0Macron warned that \u201cwe should not aggravate regional tensions but rather, through dialogue and multilateralism, pursue a broader agenda that allows us to address all the concerns caused by Iranian policies\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0nuclear, ballistic, regional&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">While admitting that there was widespread scepticism toward multilateral institutions such as the UN and the EU, Macron noted that one &#8220;may be tired of multilateralism&#8221;.
