We had something occur at the Here/There camp earlier. I am shocked.
A worker from the HUB came by. (Berkeley’s one stop shop for homeless services) As she was in camp, a lady in a vehicle stopped and said, “You’re not helping them, are you?” The lady from the HUB responded, “Oh no, I’m not helping them.”
Here/There has an 80 year old in it. It has seriously disabled in it. And the HUB was not there to help.
Berkeley does have a brand new, well landscaped, 2.4 million dollar navigation center. They have housed five in a week.
It has been around 6 months since the mayor came to camp and met this lady. Help was promised.
Did I mention the well landscaped navigation center? 45 beds? I remember 50 beds being the plan. Navigate to where? There is no housing. So, the navigation center stabilizes 45 people, and gives them a chance to exit the navigation center in the only exit that functions. Homeward Bound. 6 months to find someone to house you out of town. If you fail, you go back to the streets. Where the HUB says their not helping. The HUB helps those in the navigation center. They’ve housed five. Two in Berkeley, according to the paper.
The homeless are prioritized by need in Berkeley. 80 years old. Poor health. Serious recent injuries. Not a priority because?
The silence is deafening.
