Today, the Trump administration is actively supporting an attempted right-wing coup against democratically-elected President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela. He declared recognition of an opposition right-wing, Juan Guaidó, the opening shot at “regime change.” This is extremely dangerous and we urge all peace-loving people to come out to protest U.S. coup plots and in defense of President Maduro’s government and Venezuela’s sovereignty.
The right-wing coup plotters inside Venezuela are being directed from the White House, with Pres. Donald Trump, Vice-Pres. Mike Pence, Sec. of State Mike Pompeo, and National Security Adviser John Bolton calling for Maduro’s overthrow. If the U.S. succeeds in its illegal plans, there would be a major destabilization and possible war in the region, with devastating effects for tens of millions of people in Venezuela and Latin America For years, the U.S. government has imposed crushing economic sanctions on the country, robbing the Venezuelan people of billions in revenues, denying them food, medicine and other needs, and then cynically blaming Venezuela as being solely responsible for its economic crisis.
WHY IS THE U.S. PLOTTING AGAINST PRESIDENT MADURO AND HIS GOVERNMENT?
Ever since President Hugo Chávez took office in 1999, and with Maduro’s succession, the Bolivarian government of Venezuela has worked hard to provide for the people, creating a free healthcare system for the Venezuelan people, has built 2.5 MILLION homes that have benefited 10 million people, and built tens of new universities for free higher education. These benefits are financed by Venezuela’s oil, because the revolutionary government has guaranteed that the oil resources belong to the people, not to U.S. oil companies. Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world.

In May of last year, Nicholas Kristof published an explosive column in the New York Times, reviewing the evidence and concluding that it points to people other than Kevin. You can still read it here if you missed it.
The 48 Hours episode will include interviews with Kristof, Kevin’s attorney Norman Hile, and DPF Board Director Thomas R. Parker, a retired FBI agent who reinvestigated the case.

Before he left office, former Gov. Jerry Brown ordered new, albeit limited, DNA testing for evidence gathered in Kevin’s case. It was a step in the right direction, but it stopped short of a true innocence investigation that we were all hoping for. Liduina Vannes and Bruce Neuburger will discuss their work with the Annunciation House refugee center at El Paso in December. Norma Gallegos will discuss her experience and views in the San Ysidro/Tijuana area.
The discussion will cover conditions for refugees at the border, the work of the refugee center, things learned from the refugee families from Honduras, Guatemala and elsewhere, including their treatment by ICE. Also discussed will be the historical background of today’s migration and the shutdown over the wall.
For those interested in looking for some way to help there will be information on volunteering and supporting refugee work.

This is not a listing for an organized protest at the campaign kick-off rally, but a call for concerned citizens and organizations to make plans to resist her campaign, starting at the very first event. Bare minimum, show up on January 27 with signs and literature to let Kamala stans know how unacceptable this cop is as a presidential candidate. Let her followers on social media know the truth when she spews lies.

What are you going to do, Oakland, when Kamala Harris sets up shop in our town to push her phony “progressive prosecutor” schtick? Her campaign slogan at this point is “Kamala Harris for the People,” but we know she is anything but a candidate for the people, all of the people, those who lost their homes to predatory banks, for instance. She claims to be “tough, principled, fearless,” but we know none of that is true. She’s certainly not tough on the wealthy and powerful. She’s just another ambitious corpocrat trying to pretend she’s further to the left than she’s ever actually been.
She’s pitching herself as “a lifelong public safety and civil rights leader” and it’s time we stand up to say, “hell no.” Jailing people of color does not equal public safety and prosecutors violating defendants’ rights is not civil rights. Among the early staff members she has chosen include her sister Maya Harris, who was a senior adviser to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign. We don’t need any more establishment democrats, and definitely not in prosecutor’s clothing.
Her main campaign headquarters will be in Baltimore, but her West Coast operations will be run out of Oakland. Let’s literally run her out of Oakland by not letting her peddle her lies here unchallenged. She doesn’t get to claim her record has been “taking on the Wall Street Banks for middle-class homeowners” without being mocked in public.

On January 27th, exactly four years ago, the city of Kobane in northern Syria was freed from the hands of the gangs of the so-called Islamic State after months of fierce fighting by the courageous fighters of the YPJ and YPG. At that time, we poured onto the streets in our millions, day after day, week after week, to express our solidarity with the Kobane resistance and to compel the world to act. Nonstop, powerful actions outside the Middle East gave the comrades fighting in the city courage to continue and forced the international powers to act.
The weeks of resistance in Kobane became a symbol of the will, power and hope brought into the world by the young Rojava revolution. Through this resistance, Rojava’s principles of direct democracy, an ecological and collective economy, and the liberation of women became known around the world. Kobane has become a symbol of international solidarity and common struggle – our solidarity across borders and ideological differences, as democrats, socialists, feminists and eco-activists

Liberated Lens Film Collective and Chiapas Support Committee presents a program of documentary shorts on the anti-capitalist Resistance in southern Mexico.
The Resistance shares many of the principles and goals of the Zapatistas movement: autonomy from the capitalist economy, communalist self-government rooted in indigenous traditions, an end to the subordination of women, respect for the natural world. Indigenous women are at the forefront of many of these ongoing struggles.

On the eve of entering office, four female politicians are an emboldened, new generation of feminist officials at the forefront of defending and redefining democracy in Brazil. Building their trajectories out of local grassroots struggles, each has developed distinct approaches in their respective states. Ten months following the assassination of city councilwoman Marielle Franco, their collective work demonstrates that Marielle is still present. They will discuss feminism, formal politics, and innovative modes of resistance to the radical right turn in government. We will consider ways we can take action in solidarity.
Join us in this unprecedented opportunity to hear from and dialogue with 4 newly elected Brazilian politicians as they begin historic terms in office:
(1) Talíria Petrone (RJ), is one of the few Black women ever elected to Brazil’s Federal Congress. She is a history teacher who sees education as the basis for resistance and for the construction of a new world: her struggle has always begun in the classroom and on the streets. A long-time ally of Marielle Franco, Petrone considers herself a Black socialist feminist and has steadily fought for women’s rights, universal public health and education, and against anti-Black genocide.
(2) Sâmia Bomfim (SP), was elected recently to Brazil’s Federal Congress at the age of 27. In 2016, she became the youngest councilwoman in the capital of São Paulo, and rose to political prominence as she battled the proto-fascist youth movement MBL. Her activism has propelled her to lead one of the largest student movements in Brazil
(3) Jô Cavalcanti (PE), is a mother, Black woman, feminist and resident of Recife’s peripheries. Cavalcanti works in Recife’s informal economy and was recently elected as a co-state representative in a movement called “Juntas” (Together) Cavalcanti is also a national leader of the “workers without homes movement” (MTST), Brazil’s largest urban social movement.
(4) Fernanda Melchionna (RS), was recently elected to the Brazilian Federal Congress, garnering the largest amount of votes of any elected official in Rio Grande do Sul. She began her activism at the age of 14 in the nation-wide struggles against the privatization of public services. First elected to public office at the age of 24,
