A mural depicting a girl, a plant and an hourglass, the symbol of the Extiction Rebellion movement, appeared at the Marble Arch, the BBC reports.
The mural’s style and message resemble Banksy’s works, but the artist has not confirmed he was the author of the piece. Usually, he posts his new works on his website or on Instagram, but this work has not appeared on the platforms so far. Activists who occupied the arch until Thursday believe Banksy is behind the mural.
Westminster City Council said it was “aware of the possible Banksy” and its staff members were “looking into it”.
More than 1,100 people have been detained in London since April 15. Protesters blocked roads and sites, including Oxford Circus, Waterloo Bridge and Parliament Square.
Extinction Rebellion calls on the government to tell the truth about the scale of the climate crisis. Protesters also want the reduction of carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and setting up a Citizens’ Assembly to oversee the changes.
