2. Thursday, 9:00am (PT); 12Noon (ET). Tibet Talks: 10 Years of Xi Jinping
Online will stream on Facebook: TIBET TALKS: 10 YEARS OF XI JINPING | Facebook
(You don’t need login to view)
When Xi Jinping took over as China’s top leader in 2012, there were hopes that his reputation as a moderate and his father’s relationship with the Dalai Lama would lead to a softening of policies. Instead, Xi has proven to be a hardliner whose indefinite rule began this past month, unforeseen a decade ago.
To mark Xi’s decade in charge, ICT is publishing a new report, “10 Years of Xi Jinping: Sinification and Securitization of Tibetans for the Chinese Nation-State.” In this Tibet Talk, we’ll speak to the report’s author, ICT Research Analyst Tenzin Norgay, about Xi’s impact on Tibet and what the future holds

3. Thursday, 12Noon (PT), Bipartisan Agreement — on Israeli Apartheid
Online registration: Meeting Registration – Zoom
As the new Israeli government escalates state violence against Palestinians to unprecedented levels, join these virtual 30-minute gatherings to learn the latest, take action, and connect with others who share your anger and resolve. When you register for one event, you will automatically be registered for upcoming gatherings as well.
Power Hours for Palestine: Take Action for 30 Min with JVP
It’s no secret that U.S. support for Israel crosses party lines. But the coming weeks promise a veritable cross-aisle parade of high-power politicians traveling from D.C. to celebrate the “ironclad” relationship with Israel. Right now, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is leading a delegation. Next week, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will lead another delegation. And Florida governor and Republican presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis will be heading over later this week as well.
The timing of these trips is no coincidence. This week marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the state of Israel, and its heavily nationalistic Independence Day and Memorial Day celebrations. It is also, of course, the 75th anniversary of the Nakba — but a discussion of Palestinians’ ongoing state of catastrophe and ethnic cleansing at the hands of the Israeli government is not expected to be on any of the delegates’ agendas.
So what is the purpose of these visits?
Jeffries’ office said, “While in Israel, we will meet with a number of stakeholders about Israel’s unique challenges within the region and discuss our efforts to maintain and strengthen the special relationship between our nations.”
McCarthy has brag-Tweeted that he will be the second Speaker of the House in history to address the Knesset, in commemoration of Israel’s 75th year of statehood.
DeSantis will meet with Trump-buddy Netanyahu to deliver a keynote at a trade conference co-sponsored, deeply ironically, by the Museum of Tolerance in Jerusalem. He’ll speak about “the importance of the U.S.-Israel relationship – especially in difficult times.”
“Difficult times” may allude to the recent massive protests in Israel over Netanyahu’s proposed judicial overhaul. But, despite the mildest of rebukes from the Biden administration, these visits make clear that Washington is as committed as ever to its uncharacteristic display of bipartisan solidarity — over unconditional support for Israel’s apartheid regime.

WHY: With the Balikatan military exercises coming to an end, BAYAN NorCal is heightening the call to oppose and expose the real role of these military exercises: for the U.S. to tighten its imperialist grip on the Philippines and to take advantage of the country! On the anniversary of the signing of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), BAYAN NorCal continues the call to JUNK EDCA and all other forms of unequal military agreements! Additionally, Bongbong Marcos Jr. will be holding a bilateral meeting with U.S. President Biden on May 1st, which we recognize as yet another attempt to strengthen the relationship between this imperialist power and its puppet regime. We call on all Filipinos and solidarity allies to join us in the call for the U.S. to get out of the Philippines and Asia Pacific!

Tim Redmond, the editor, and publisher of 48 Hills, San Francisco’s online independent community news and culture site, was formerly the editor of the legendary SF Bay Guardian alternative weekly newspaper. Currently, San Franciscans are becoming more and more skeptical of the way this City is being managed, the growing number of people living and dying on our streets, many from the effects of the fentanyl epidemic. Who is responsible, and can this City overcome these failures, which are growing with no end in sight?
Tim will speak about these issues and others from his insider’s knowledge about the policies being discussed and proposed at City Hall; and his opinions on the root causes of these deplorable issues in this affluent and self-proclaimed “progressive” City.
We always look forward to Tim’s appearances at our Forum, as we try to unravel and discuss these issues which we deeply care about. This is an opportunity to participate in the discussion after his presentation. Join us for a lively exchange of ideas.

12. Sunday, 2:30pm – 4:00pm (PT); 5:30pm – 7:00pm (ET), Military Bases and US Empire: A Conversation with David Vine, Author of Base Nation
Online registration: Meeting Registration – Zoom
In February 2023, the Biden administration announced the establishment of four new U.S. military bases in the Philippines, under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, to counter China and establish dominance in the Asia-Pacific region. The new bases add to the five existing bases established in 2016 under Obama, and come over 20 years after the closure of the Subic Bay and Clark Air Bases, which came under intense scrutiny and were closed after the Philippine senate rejected their extension following protests throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Throughout history, the U.S. has used military bases as part of its imperial project to assert its political and economic hegemony around the world. These bases have led to severe problems in host countries, such as human rights abuses, sexual violence, and long-term environmental damage.
Join Malaya Movement USA and Malaya New York for a conversation with Professor David Vine, author of Base Nation: How U.S. Military Bases Abroad Harm America and the World and learn about the history of U.S. military bases in places like the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Guam, and more.

May Day – International Workers Day
14. Monday, 11:00am May First 2023 San Francisco March and Rally
In person meet at:
16th Street & Mission St. BART Station
SF
