6 PETITIONS

1. URGENT: Tell House Reps. to ‘NOT SIGN’ Petition to Force Vote on $17B Gaza Genocide Package

  SIGNz; TAKE ACTION: CLICK HERE!

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) urgently calls on all Americans who oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza to call on their member of Congress in the U.S. House to “NOT SIGN” the Democratic discharge petition currently circulating in Congress. This petition, already endorsed by four representatives according to the House Clerk’s website, seeks to force a vote on the Senate’s already adopted $14 billion aid package to Israel.

Speaker Mike Johnson’s rejection of the Senate’s aid package prompted this move, following his failed attempt to pass a $17.6 billion unconditional aid package lacking conditions on military aid to Israel.

The petition, introduced by Rules Committee Ranking Member Jim McGovern (D-MA), has gained initial support from Reps. Gabe Vasquez (D-NM), Stephen Lynch (D-MA), and Matt Cartwright (D-PA).

With Democrats holding 213 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, there is potential for disaffected Republicans to collaborate with Democrats, achieving the 218 votes needed to initiate a procedural discharge petition and bypass Speaker Johnson’s block.

2. Write to Congress: Stop Weapons & War. Invest in Life

NATIONAL STRIKE FOR PALESTINE!!

Many countries have withdrawn their $$ support and weapons to Israel, including supporting sanctioning Israel. Some have take  cases of GENOCIDE against Israel, US and UK to the ICJ.

9. Sunday, 9:30am – 11:00am, Real Solutions to SF’s Affordable Housing Crisis

Unitarian Universalist Sunday Forum

First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

Thomas Starr King Room 1187 Franklin Street at Geary, SF

The issue of housing development now dominates the politics of San Francisco. While all agree that the City lacks affordable housing opportunities for seniors, families with children, and people at risk of homelessness, solutions backed by the Governor, State Legislature and Mayor of San Francisco center on the provision of market rate housing, unaffordable to all but a handful of current residents.

Pushing high density market rate housing as the primary aim, policies now adopted by both state and local government restricts the participation of existing residents, removes long standing protections of existing neighborhoods, and cuts required affordability which will actually displace low and moderate income residents of the City. What options to increase affordable housing exist, and what can San Franciscans do to reverse the current dangers of an un-regulated market rate housing policy now adopted by Gov. Newsom and Mayor Breed.

Calvin Welch Calvin Welch is the past Program Director and President of the Board of the San Francisco Information Clearinghouse, a nonprofit, community-based technical assistance and advocacy organization specializing in affordable housing, community development, and land-use planning issues. He was a founding member of the council of Community Housing Organizations (CCHO) and the Coalition for San Francisco Neighborhoods. He has served on various city task forces and advisory committees on issues ranging from affordable housing to financing the living wage.

Controlling the supply, distribution, and cost of water to an occupied people is apartheid in action. Israel, through legal and illegal means, maintains near-complete control over the region’s freshwater aquifers, severely restricting Palestinians’ abilities to drill wells, install pumps, build water tanks, or even collect rainwater. The average Israeli consumes over 3 times the water used by each Palestinian on the water grid in the West Bank (9 times the water used by those off the grid). West Bank Palestinians pay 1/3 or more of their income to Israeli companies for drinking water. Meanwhile, Gazans are now consuming less than 3 liters per day—hardly enough for survival.

VFHL offers three short videos describing the “hydropolitics” and structural water apartheid in the Holy Land. Our panel discussion will explore designed inequalities in water distribution; the physical, economic and regulatory controls; as well as the ecological problems of pollution and over-extraction.

Speakers:

– Nancy Murray – Co-founder of Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine

– Mazin Qumsiyeh – Director of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability

 – Eyal Hareuveni – Author of “Parched: Israel’s Policy of Water Deprivation in the West Bank”

Our moderator will be Jeff Halper, Israeli-American anthropologist, author, lecturer, and political activist; founder of Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) and a co-founder of The One Democratic State Campaign (ODSC)(invited).
