Tuesday, August 5

1. Tuesday, 7:00am (PT); 10:00am (ET), The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation: Aid as a Weapon

Register on line: The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation: Aid as a Weapon – crowdcast

In March, Israel shattered the ceasefire in Gaza by resuming its relentless bombing and imposing a total blockade on humanitarian aid—ushering in a new, even more brutal phase of the genocide.

In response to growing international outrage, the Israeli government rolled out the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)—a program designed not to deliver meaningful relief, but to mask and maintain its policy of collective starvation and forced displacement.

Through GHF, Israel has restricted access to aid distribution points, collapsed the reach of UN agencies, and funneled desperate Palestinians toward four isolated aid sites near Gaza’s southern border—pushing them closer to Egypt in what increasingly looks like a strategy of mass expulsion.

Behind this policy lies a network of private actors and US-based contractors who are profiting from what is, in reality, a death trap masquerading as humanitarian assistance

Yara Asi is an Al-Shabaka member and an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida’s School of Global Health Management and Informatics. She serves as co-director of the Palestine Program for Health and Human Rights. Yara is also a non-resident fellow at the Arab Center in Washington, DC.

Alexandra Feagans is a researcher at the Adalah Justice Project, currently investigating the GHF’s finance structure and the private interests behind the initiative. She recently received her Master’s degree in Public Administration and International Affairs from Columbia University, where she served as president of the Palestine Working Group.

Tariq Kenney-Shawa is Al-Shabaka’s US Policy Fellow and co-host of Al-Shabaka’s Policy Lab series. He holds a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University. Tariq’s research and writing have covered a range of topics, from the role of open-source intelligence in exposing Israel’s war crimes to analysis of Palestinian liberation tactics.

3. Tuesday, 10:00am, Golden Rule anti-nuclear sailboat has arrived in San Francisco

Pier 39 (J Dock)
SF

The public and media are cordially invited to attend. The 34-foot wooden ketch and her 4-person crew will sail around San Francisco Bay throughout August, making stops in multiple cities, including San Francisco, Alameda, Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond and San Mateo. The public will be invited to visit the boat and a lucky few will even go out sailing on the Bay.

The Golden Rule peace boat is famous for attempting to sail into the Marshall Islands in 1958 to stop nuclear bomb testing. The U.S. had exploded 67 nuclear bombs in the Marshall Islands. Now a national project of Veterans For Peace, her red sails are emblazoned with the organization’s distinctive logo, as well as with the universally known peace sign, which was originally the symbol of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the UK.

Public meetings with local organizations will feature film screenings and speakers warning about the growing danger of nuclear war. Speakers will also call for an end to U.S.-backed genocide in Gaza and ICE attacks here in the U.S.

The Golden Rule peace boat will sail around Alcatraz on Friday afternoon, August 8, with Dennis Bernstein and KPFA’s Flashpoints team on board, followed by a live broadcast from the boat at 5 pm

A new film about the Golden Rule will be screened at the New Parkway Theater in Oakland, 474 24th Street, on Sunday, August 10, at 12:30 pm.

80th Anniversary of U.S. Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima

4. Wednesday, 9:00am, Never Again! 80th Anniversary Commemoration of US Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki

Lawrence Livermore Lab – West Gate
cross streets of West Gate Dr. (end of Daphne Dr.) and S. Vasco Road
Livermore, CA

9:00am – Rally

10:30am – symbolic, group “die-in” in the road (which will be closed), led in traditional Japanese Bon Dance (inviting our ancestors to join us), and nonviolent witness and direct action those who so choose.

JOIN US at the Westgate entrance to Livermore Lab on this historic 80th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to support global nuclear abolition at the location where horrific new warheads are being designed today.

Why at Livermore Lab?

Founded in 1952 to speed the development of new “generations” of nuclear weapons, the Livermore Lab is one of two locations where all U.S. nuclear weapons are designed. Livermore Lab is currently spending billions to develop a new warhead for U.S. Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, another new warhead for a surprise nuclear attack to be launched by airplanes, and a third new warhead for small submarines that do not presently carry any nuclear weapons. This is the place to be to stop nuclear weapons and demand their total elimination!

Speakers:

Arjun Makajani, PhD. (Director of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in Washington, DC)

Helen Jacard (Veterans for Peace and the Golden Rule peace ship),

Reverend Michael Yoshii (United Methodist Church and thinker on Japanese internment),

Reverend Monica Cross (CA Poor Peoples Campaign),

Patricia Ellsberg (peace activist and wife of the late Daniel Ellsberg),

Marylia Kelley (Senior Advisor of Livermore-based Tri-Valley CAREs).

8. Thursday, 7:00pm – 8:30pm, Community Vigil for Awdah Hathaleen

Lake Merritt Amphitheater,
 Oakland, CA

Join us as we gather in community to honor the life and legacy of Awdah Hathaleen, a beloved Palestinian activist, teacher, and voice of steadfast resistance from Masafer Yatta.

Awdah had deep ties to the Bay Area. Over the years, he collaborated with local organizers, educators, and solidarity groups, inspiring many with his unwavering commitment to justice. His words and witness helped shape our understanding of the Palestinian struggle—not as something distant, but deeply connected to the fight for liberation everywhere.

In June he and his cousin were scheduled to speak in the SF Bay Area. They were detained at SFO and deported back to their homes.

On July 28th, Awdah was killed by an Israeli settler, another life stolen in a system of apartheid that continues to dehumanize and dispossess. His murder is not an isolated tragedy—it is part of a violent structure that we must name, challenge, and dismantle.

As people of conscience in the Bay Area, we come together to say: We will not forget. We will not be silent. We will demand justice. Bring candles, signs, your voice, and your heart.

Host: International Solidarity Movement

80th Anniversary of U.S. Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki

10. Saturday, 10:00am – 2:00pm, Fundraiser for Palestinian Women Workers and Liberation

350 Rhode Island
SF

Bay Area Labor for Palestine and 1021 Members for Palestine will be hosting a hybrid event, via Zoom and in person, to raise funds for the Palestine New Federation of Trade Unions. No one will be turned away for lack of funds, but RSVP is required please.

Mark (Osta) Ostapiak, an eligibility worker in San Francisco, said, “I’m excited about this event because it sets an example for the kind of international labor solidarity that is a prerequisite for building mass labor power to stop genocide in Palestine and the attacks on the most vulnerable workers in the U.S. Union and community members should attend this event in order to hear directly from women trade union members in the West Bank about how we can support their struggle for Palestinian liberation and workers’ power.”

A member of an East Bay schools chapter named De said, “I am attending this fundraiser and meeting because of 1021’s call in 2023 for a ceasefire. That 1021 members and 1021 as an organization stood up so fast and so early to take a moral stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters across the world, simply because it was the right thing to do, filled me with pride and restored my faith in collective action, and I hope it does the same for my brothers and sisters in SEIU 1021.”

The program will include a conversation between Hanan Salman and women leaders in the Palestine New Federation of Trade Unions, and all funds raised will go directly to the PNFTU.
