BREAKING NEWS: We have a bill!

Yesterday, the new CalCare bill, AB 1690, was officially introduced to the California State Assembly. Read our press release with primary author, Assemblymember Ash Kalra here.

This bill is what’s called a spot bill, which means that it states our intention to work toward single-payer health care for all Californians. The California Nurses Association will work with Assemblymember Kalra to introduce full single-payer legislation in 2024.

This choice was strategic. During the last legislative session, we heard feedback that some legislators felt they weren’t able to give sufficient input on the CalCare legislation. While we will never compromise on the core principles of CalCare, there is room for a more collaborative process. A spot bill ensures that there is a CalCare bill to organize around, while giving us time to work closely with different legislators to gain their support by listening to their feedback and considering changes where possible.

Even before the bill was announced, we held a Statewide CalCare Strategy Call on Wednesday night to kick-off our organizing plans for the legislative session. Several hundred supporters from around the state joined. Here’s what we covered:

We’re organizing a CalCare Statewide Weekend of Action on March 25 and 26! We’re asking folks from across the state to host canvass actions in their communities that weekend so we can visibly demonstrate the power of our movement to the legislature. We need as many canvass hosts as possible. Sign up here to host a canvass! You don’t need any prior experience, and we’ll provide you with all the training and support you’ll need.

We also unveiled the rest of our campaign strategy for the coming months, which includes:

  • More focused union outreach, especially to the central labor councils across the state.
  • More education inside the legislature that the California Nurses Association’s Government Relations Department will lead.
  • Growing the size and strength of our coalition. We’ll have more information on this soon, but for now if you’re a representative of an organization that supports CalCare, please fill out this form.
  • And finally, more public education to address the common attacks on CalCare, including a short video series and speakers’ training.

We need all hands on deck to make sure that this organizing plan is a success, starting with the Statewide Weekend of Action on March 25 and 26. If you can commit to hosting a canvass action, sign up now and we’ll provide you with all the next steps and information you’ll need. And if you can’t commit just yet, please keep your eye out for more information in a few weeks about how to attend the canvass action closest to you.

We’re so excited to get to work building support for this legislation. Thank you for being a part of our movement.

In solidarity,

Nurses’ Campaign to Win CalCare
