Lisa’s Song YouTube – turn on your sound

Lisa’s Song by Veronica Cinibulk – YouTube

Lisa’s execution is set for January 12, 2021

Lisa Montgomery, a victim of multiple rapes, child sex trafficking, and domestic violence. Lisa was sentenced to death by a jury that was never informed of the full extent and impact of the sexual violence and physical abuse she endured. As a result of her trauma, she is now so mentally ill that she must receive multiple medications to prevent full-blown psychosis.

We  ask Trump  to grant a stay of execution. We believe Lisa deserves a full and fair opportunity to petition the courts to stay her execution, as well as an opportunity to present comprehensive arguments to you and your administration as to why her death sentence should be commuted to life imprisonment.

The story of Lisa’s life is worse than a nightmare. She was born with permanent brain damage caused by her mother’s drinking during pregnancy. A child of extreme poverty, she was repeatedly raped by her stepfather. She was routinely beaten and terrorized by her mother. Lisa’s mother trafficked her to men who were allowed to rape Lisa in exchange for utilities and other services. Although this was suspected or known by teachers, police, and the courts, nobody intervened to protect Lisa.

This horror continued when she married her stepbrother at the urging of her mother at the age of 18. He continued the cycle of abuse, raping and beating her. Not surprisingly, this lifetime of torture exacerbated Lisa’s genetic predisposition to mental illness, and caused her to develop a dissociative disorder in addition to complex post-traumatic stress disorder. Her severe trauma and mental illness led directly to the crime for which she was convicted – the murder of a pregnant woman and the kidnapping of her child.

Join our webinar to learn how you can get involved in these days of action.

2. Tuesday, 5:00pm (PT); 9:00pm (ET), Why did 74 million people vote for Trump?

Online

Register: Why did 74 million people vote for Trump? (actionnetwork.org)

More people voted in this election than in any other election in U.S. history, but 74 million of them voted for a fascist incumbent whose regime has advanced a vicious program of white supremacy, misogyny and theocratic patriarchy, and “America First” xenophobia. 74 million people endorsed locking children in cages, throwing immigrants in concentration camps, and backing the most vicious white supremacy, including vigilante racist and anti-Semitic murderers. A political form of Christian fundamentalism makes up the most organized solid base of this fascist movement. The 74 million include millions deeply mired in a world of lies, crazy lunatic conspiracy theories and a vicious anti-science mindset that has already killed a quarter of a million people from COVID, with the pandemic now out of control.

Some Questions
What accounts for this? What are its roots and how deep are they? Is it an historical aberration? Will this movement fade away with Trump out of office, or be further filled with revanchist determination? What is the danger and what do we do about it?

Online

Accessibility: This event will have closed captioning and live interpretation in Spanish and ASL. Please tell us about your access needs on the registration form so we can best support your participation.

Join us for a virtual community event where we will learn from a panel of grassroots experts on creating community solutions to interpersonal harm. We’ll also get skilled-up through a training on accountability tools that we can use in each of our own communities.

We are all intimately familiar with harm and violence; each one of us has committed harm and has been harmed in one way or another. And when harm happens or conflicts escalate, it’s often because our needs aren’t being met — and that’s when many people have turned to the prison industrial complex (PIC) for answers. But the PIC leaves us unsupported and fails to address any deeper social and economic problems behind why harm happens. In fact, the PIC’s interventions create more harm instead of reducing it. So we need to build solutions to violence and harm outside the PIC if we want to truly end harm. How can we do that?

How can we respond to harm and violence in ways that minimize and prevent further harm? How can we take care of each other in ways that fully meet our needs? And how can we build toward a world where our communities are able to take care of and sustain themselves?

These are big questions, but we can learn how to address them from the organizations and communities who are answering them today.

This is the seventh event of No New SF Jail Coalition’s Abolition in Action Series, a monthly series of community events and workshops on different topics related to building a jail-free, police-free, self-determined, equitable, and sustainable San Francisco. We launched the series in May with a People’s Assessment of our #ShutDown850 Ordinance, followed by a webinar on reentry services and supports in San Francisco. We’ve also hosted: a community visioning workshop on how budget advocacy can be an abolitionist organizing strategy; a panel discussion on harm reduction and decriminalization; and a resource fair supporting our unhoused community members. The Abolition in Action Series is sponsored by member organizations of the No New SF Jail Coalition, HOMEY, and BYP100.

Advances in technology over the past few decades have improved our lives in countless ways. Yet, these advances have come as a double-edged sword.

While technology has made it easier to connect with faraway family and friends and gain access to the world’s libraries of information, it has also led to a stark loss of privacy through widespread data collection and surveillance by both government agencies and for-profit companies, including the imposition of electronic monitoring at workplaces.

This livestream event will feature representatives of organizations using research, community organizing, and policy advocacy to expose and challenge the inner workings of the corporations and government agencies that are tracking us every day.

On November 23, 2020 Stella Moris, Julian’s fiancé, tweeted that over 70% of prisoners in Julian’s Belmarsh Prison wing were infected with COVID-19. His life is in imminent danger and depends on us acting urgently!

In October, Tulsi Gabbard and Thomas Massie introduced House Resolution 1175, a bill calling for the United States to ensure the release of Julian Assange. She introduced a similar bill, House Resolution 1162, with Matt Gaetz aimed at dropping criminal charges against Edward Snowden. With Tulsi Gabbard leaving Congress it is imperative to ensure that H.Res 1175 and H.Res. 1162 do not die with the start of the 117th Congress.

Please bring signs/banners/fliers if you have them, but mainly just show up. Safe distancing & masks please.

12. Thursday 12/10 – Wednesday 12/16, Haitian Lives Matter! Join Week of Action in Support of Today’s Black Jacobins

From Dec 10 (Intl Human Rights Day) to Dec 16 (30th anniversary of Haiti’s first democratically elected government)

Today, Haitians are in revolt against a corrupt government backed by the US and other western powers. As the movement has grown, the government has unleashed death squads reminiscent of the worst days of the Duvalier dictatorships. People around the world are asked by the Haitian movement to act in solidarity with them December 10-16th.

On December 16, Haitians will commemorate the first free election which brought Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the people’s party, Lavalas, to power after decades of brutal dictatorship. Within seven months, a US-orchestrated coup ousted Aristide and installed a military dictatorship that murdered thousands; re-elected in 2000, Aristide was removed by US marines in 2004 as Haiti celebrated the bicentenary of its revolution.
