First, the exciting news….This past week CA AB 1400 had a hearing and vote in the Assembly Health Committee. Over 250 people attended online and the vote passed (11-3). Next stop, the Assembly Appropriations committee for a hearing and vote Thursday, January 20th, then to the full Assembly for a vote before Jan. 31.
Here is the recording of the Health committee hearing that includes almost 2 hrs of public comment at the end before the vote. Assemblyman Jim Wood, previously an opponent, began the committee discussion of the bill (after public comment) by delivering a powerful statement of support.

(FROM CalCare)
We’re excited to be working with you over the next few weeks to pass CalCare through Assembly. If we want AB 1400 to make it through the Appropriations Committee by January 21st and the Assembly floor by January 31st, we need to get to work now.
Here’s what we need you to do next:
- RSVP for one or both of our upcoming CalCare virtual phone bank parties:
- If you’re connected to any organizations, unions, local governments, or small businesses that support AB 1400, ask their leadership to submit a support letter to the Appropriations Committee using our template support letter:
The instructions on how to use the legislature’s position letter portal are listed at the top of the document. - If you’re brand new to the movement and want to learn more, join an upcoming CalCare 101 webinar, where we’ll cover the basics of what CalCare is and how it will fix our broken health care system.
Finally, please sign our letter to Governor Newsom calling on the California Department of Public Health to rescind the dangerous new guidance allowing asymptomatic health care workers who test positive for Covid-19 or who have been exposed to the virus and are asymptomatic to return to work immediately — without isolation or testing. You can learn more in this Sacramento Bee article by CNA President Cathy Kennedy, RN.
Thanks for your support and for taking action with us. Together, we can pass AB 1400 through the Assembly, over to the State Senate, and ultimately to the governor’s desk. Onward to CalCare!
