Oakland! Tomorrow Longshore Workers will shut down the port on Thursday to hold a noon rally at Oscar Grant Plaza with Oakland teachers & students!

The City Council of Oakland is pushing ahead to give GAP-A’s billionaire owner John Fisher hundreds of millions of dollars of city and state funds for his private stadium, hotels and 3,000 1 million-dollar condos that will wreck the Port of Oakland and drive out working class Black and Brown community members.

The same City Council members also claim they are against privatization of the schools in Oakland, but they ignore the fact that Fisher and his family control KIPP and Rocketship charter schools and even the president of A’s Dave Kaval is on the board of Rocketship. Why are they helping him and his agenda?

On line register: Webinar Registration – Zoom

Voice of Witness presents their latest book Mi María: Surviving the Storm, an account of Puerto Rico’s devastating Hurricane María told by first-person narrators.

On September 20, 2017, Hurricane María pummeled Puerto Rico for over thirty hours. As brutal as the storm was, the real catastrophe was yet to come. Lack of government support left many in the archipelago without electricity, clean drinking water, food and medical care for months. Years later, Puerto Rico is still recovering.

Mi María: Surviving the Storm brings together seventeen stories of perseverance and community that ask what it means to be a US citizen in a colonial context, how communities come together in the wake of disaster and how precarity is exacerbated for those on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

Co-hosts: Voice of Witness & San Francisco Public Library

11. Sunday,1:15pm, Nomad Kurdish FilmFest

Roxie Theater
SF

Tickets: NOMAD KURDISH FILMFEST #2 – Roxie

LAKFF presents a new series of monthly screenings:

‘Nomad Kurdish FilmFest’ is a traveling Festival with monthly screenings of critically acclaimed Kurdish films.

This month we bring you:

The Little Refugee
The most heart-wrenching image of 2015 is that of a 3-year-old Syrian-Kurdish boy, dressed in a red shirt and blue jeans, washed up on a Turkish beach. His name was Alan Kurdi, and he was one of the 12 Kurdish refugees who died when their flimsy boat capsized during a desperate attempt to escape the war in Syria. This tragedy inspired the Little Refugee, a poetic interpretation of Alan’s faith by Batin Ghobadi, an Iranian-Kurdish filmmaker. Ghobadi’s magic realistic chronicle of Syrian refugees is a beautiful and emotional reminder of the tragic faith of displaced people.

The Mandarin Tree
This beautiful short story from Cengiz Akaygün, the German-born Kurdish filmmaker, is an intimate ode to the power of symbolism and hope. Sirin, a young Kurdish girl, draws a colorful bird for her father who’s a political prisoner. When her drawing is being rejected by the prison guards for being an “anarchist symbol”, she’s devastated. But soon after she learns that regimes might be able to chain people, they cannot imprison ideas.

The Stain
The Stain is an intimate portrait of war trauma. A stunning short film written and directed by Shorsh Wakili, a graphic designer-turned filmmaker from Rojhalat, Kurdish Iran. An ex-soldier working in a movie theater battles a blood-red stain that appears on screen every time a war film plays. The more he fights the stain, the bigger it gets until it drips onto the floor and leaves a puddle. Unable to remove the stain, the man must face his unresolved trauma about his life in the military.
