Public Invited To El Rey Theatre Project Meeting

The owners of the one-time Art Deco movie palace are restarting a project to renovate the theater and build housing on its parking lots.

Neighbors and business owners are invited to a pre-application meeting about the redevelopment of the historic El Rey Theater.

Developer and owner Optimal Partners and project sponsor Goldman Architects will host the meeting on Wednesday June 7, in the Ingleside Library community room. It will be simulcast through Zoom.

The pre-application meeting is part of the San Francisco Planning Department’s procedures prior to filing a full project application.

At the pre-application meeting, neighbors and the surrounding community can review the project proposal for the site, which includes 42 residential units on the adjacent rear parking lots. Four of the 42 units are proposed for construction above the existing commercial wings, one of which housed the first Gap location.

Neighbors will have an opportunity to ask questions of the project sponsor as well as raise any concerns they may have with the proposed plans.

The theatre was designed by Timothy Pflueger, who also designed several well-known buildings and theaters in San Francisco, including the Castro Theatre.

The 1931-built theatre recently sustained some damage during the storms in January, causing pieces of plaster from the facade to fall to the sidewalk. The Ingleside Light reported earlier this month that repair work was underway.
