I’m writing to you today because a number of months ago, you responded to a very important request that our team sent out recruiting candidates interested in running for office.

Hundreds of people from our movement across the country responded, for elected positions up and down the ballot, from local school boards and city councils all the way up to the United States Congress.

First of all  — thank you for taking a huge first step and submitting your response to our survey. It’s leaders like you who make our movement everything that it is today, and who prove what is possible when people come together and organize for change at the grassroots level.

But here’s the truth: No matter who you are or where you live, there is an incredible amount of hard work that goes into running for office and winning elections — which is why it’s critical that our movement is organized and coordinated in our efforts. That’s why I’m asking you to take the next step today:

Can you RSVP to join me and our allies at Run for Something for a live candidate recruitment training call on Wednesday, February 2 at 8:00 p.m. ET?

Whether you’re already deeply involved in campaigns and political organizing, or you’re a newcomer who simply recognizes the urgent need for change in your local community, this event is an incredible opportunity to connect with others from our movement all across the country and start to make the idea of running for office a reality.

When I ran for mayor of Burlington, Vermont in 1981, our campaign won a tightly-contested race against a long-term incumbent by just 10 votes. Everyone said that it couldn’t be done — and yet, against all odds, we did it.

That victory, and other victories that followed, proved what can be done when you engage locally and put forth an agenda that puts working people first.

As I have said from the very beginning: real change never takes place from the top on down, it always occurs from the bottom on up. That is the history of every effort that has ever brought transformational change to our society, and it is the struggle that our progressive movement must amplify today.

The bottom line is that right now, we face more crises than at any other point in the modern history of this country, and running candidates for office who are ready to create the change that we need in this moment must be a top priority for our movement.

Will you join us for our candidate recruitment training? This is an important first step toward people like you from our movement being elected to office and helping create a government that works for working people, not just the wealthy and powerful.

I hope that you’ll RSVP to join me and Run for Something on Wednesday, February 2 at 8:00 p.m. ET, and that we will continue moving forward together.

As always, thank you for all that you do.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders
