Greetings,
We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept.15-Oct.15) with a film about elections.  Many people don’t remember Willie Velasquez or ever knew of him.  This film takes us into the earlier racial voting suppression days from the 1960s – 80s.  It’s the story of how the Hispanic Vote evolved in the U.S., but sadly is still a continuing story.

WILLIE VELASQUEZ:

YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE

Friday, September 20, 2024

6:30pm (PDT), 7:30 pm (MDT), 8:30 pm (CDT), 9:30 pm (EDT)

The documentary, Willie Velasquez: Your Vote Is Your Voice, directed by Hector Galan tells the story of Willie Velasquez who mobilized Latinx(s) to vote and in turn changed the direction of History and permanently altered the American political landscape.

In the documentary Your Vote is Your Voice we examine the obstacles Velasquez, along with other people of Hispanic heritage, had to overcome to obtain representation in city government and address Latinx issues which still exist today.

With the creation of The Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, Willie Velasquez was thrust into a life-long battle to gain political equality and bring into the democratic process an active and educated Latinx electorate.

After the screening there will be a Q&A discussion.
