Founded in 1959, the San Francisco Mime Troupe creates and produces socially relevant theater. Despite the name “mime,” their productions feature original music, comedy, and political satire rather than pantomime.
The Tony Award-winning troupe opens its 67th season with WRECKAGE: A Musical Tragicomedy, written by Michael Gene Sullivan, with music and lyrics by Daniel Savio.
Is it just us, or does it feel like everything is falling apart?
Mary, a flower seller barely managing to survive in an increasingly unaffordable city, must defend her street corner from an evangelical newcomer eagerly awaiting the Rapture. Meanwhile, a software developer discovers the AI he’s helping create may be far more dangerous than advertised, while a National Guard soldier finds himself confronting protesters exercising the freedoms he enlisted to protect.
Hallucinating robots, economic collapse, protesting frogs, and people praying for the end of the world collide in a new musical comedy that asks whether anything hopeful can be built from the wreckage.
But when it’s all over, will there be enough left to build something new out of this… wreckage?
Directed by Lisa Hori-Garcia, with music direction by Daniel Savio and Will Durkee, the production features Michael Gene Sullivan, Jed Parsario, Keiko Shimosato Carreiro, and Chloris Li.
All performances are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Live music begins 30 minutes before each show.
