This month, Sensible Cinema along with SF LaborFest remembers the letter carriers strike of March 1970 beginning in New York City and spreading across the nation. Described as the largest wildcat strike in U.S. history, this action resulted in a raise, collective bargaining, and respect for the rank and file letter carriers in New York as well as the United States.
In the film we will see an ultimate act of civil disobedience against the Federal Government forcing President Nixon to the bargaining table to address what had been a decades long struggle for equality and respect, and shaping a brighter future for themselves and for those who came after them.
After the screening there will be a discussion and Q&A.

3. Saturday, 12-2:00pm (PT); 3:00pm – 5:00pm (ET), Black Women’s Lives Count
Will be on YouTube:
Black Women’s Lives Count: Reclaiming Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE) – YouTube
Since the early 1980s, at least 200 Black women and girls were killed or disappeared and presumed dead in South Los Angeles, they were victims of multiple serial killers who preyed on vulnerable and impoverished Black women. Law enforcement referred to the victims as NHI (No Humans Involved) and the murders were not prioritized by public officials or the media. For decades, the Black Coalition Fighting Back Serial Murders (Black Coalition) protested and gathered community support in demanding justice. The Black Coalition are now working on a permanent memorial monument (ROSE South LA) for the victims that reclaims their dignity, shows community care, underscores that their lives mattered and provides family members and the impacted community a dignified space for reflection and healing.
- Conversation with founder Margaret Prescod and artist Michael Massenburg from the Black Coalition Fighting Back Serial Murders
- Archives display of the Black Coalition & local community struggles
- Film clips from Tales of the Grim Sleeper, an award winning film that tells the story of the murders and the fight for justice

4. Saturday, 4:00pm – 5:30pm, The Forced Migration Crisis At The Border
South Berkeley Senior Center
2939 Ellis Street
Berkeley, CA 94703
Tens of millions of people around the world are being forced from their homes.
The climate crisis, economic, political, and social crises–the violence of poverty, the state, and gangs–have made life impossible in their homelands.
The politicians–both Democrats and Republicans–want us to believe that these thousands of desperate people are a threat to our lives. That’s a lie. We cannot allow the separation, imprisonment, deportation of migrant families to be carried out in our name.
Justin Akers Chacon–a Chicano educator, author, and socialist activist–will discuss the current crisis at the border. Chacon is based in San Diego, California and is involved in border resistance as well as campaigns for worker and migrant rights in the US-Mexico border region. His most recent book is, “The Border Crossed Us: The Case for Opening the US-Mexico Border.”

7. Monday, 12:00Noon, The People’s State Of The Nation Address
Philippine Consulate
447 Sutter St (nr. Powell)

Each year, the Philippine president misrepresents the true state of the Philippines through so-called “accomplishments” and the country’s progress. The people RESIST this misrepresentation by presenting the actual conditions and exposing the government’s hunger for profit and power.
This August 6th is the 5 year anniversary of the assassination attempt on Brandon Lee’s life by the Philippine military and until now there has been no independent investigation and accountability in the brazen shooting that left him paralyzed from the chest down.
Please join us at 12 noon, July 22, to protest at the Philippine consulate to demand justice for Brandon Lee and all victims of state violence.
