On January 2, 2021, Vincent Bryant, a Black, unhoused man was shot in the face at point blank range by the Berkeley Police while experiencing a mental health crisis. Thankfully, he survived, but this police response is outrageous.
Berkeley Copwatch invites you, the Berkeley community, to analyze footage of this incident and try to understand what went wrong.
We will be joined by a panel of mental health workers and activists to explore the question: What would mental health care and crisis response look like without police involvement? We will examine how mental health emergency response currently happens and the rising opportunity for alternative crisis response in Berkeley. We will also look at other communities already doing this work. Break out groups will follow and community dialogue will be encouraged.
In Berkeley, we have an opportunity to create structural change: this summer the City Council approved an initiative for a Specialized Care Unit that would respond to mental health crises without police involvement. Now is the time to pressure the City of Berkeley to follow through on their commitment:
– The SCU must be well funded, so that it can actually be effective
– The SCU must be dispatched without police
– Since the police will not be responding to these incidents, funding must come directly from the police budget
– There must be options for long-term care in addition to crisis intervention
*Content Warning: This event will discuss and show video of police violence against Black people and people with mental health conditions.*

3. Thursday, 9:00am (PT); 12Noon (ET), #YemenCantWait: Where do we go from here?
Webinar
Registration: Webinar Registration – Zoom
Win Without War is hosting a webinar to discuss what comes next for the United States and Yemen.
Right now, the United States is complicit in the largest humanitarian crisis on the planet.
More than 24 million people — roughly 80% of Yemenis — are in dire need of immediate aid. The UN recently warned that the country is “speeding towards the worst famine the world has seen in decades” and upwards of 12 million children are at incredible risk. Yet for the last six years, the United States has helped fuel this crisis by selling weapons, and providing military support for the Saudi and Emirati-led intervention in Yemen.
President Biden recently decided to take a small, but critically needed step: pausing U.S. weapon sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE. But to finally end the U.S. as a spoiler to peace in Yemen, it’s clear that more urgent action is required.
Join us as we’ll be hearing from special guests on updates around what is happening on the ground in Yemen, how we can end U.S. complicity in this crisis, what we need to do to move toward justice and accountability. This is a webinar you will not want to miss!
4. Thursday, 4:00pm – 5:30pm (PT); 7:00pm – 8:30pm (ET) Agent Orange: Lasting Legacy of the Vietnam War
Webinar registration:
Webinar: Agent Orange: Lasting Legacy of the Vietnam War – Action Network
Sixty years ago, the United States used approximately 19 million gallons of 15 different herbicides, including 13 million gallons of Agent Orange, over southern Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
Between 2.1 and 4.8 million Vietnamese were exposed during the spraying and many more continue to be exposed through the environment. Agent Orange exposure continues to negatively affect the lives of men and women in Vietnam and in the United States. Agent Orange exposure is associated with cancers, immune deficiencies, reproductive illnesses and severe birth defects in Vietnamese, American, and Vietnamese-Americans directly exposed as well as their children and grandchildren.
In this powerful panel, Hoan Thi Tran will talk about her personal story, as will Heather Bowser. Jonathan Moore will discuss the U.S. legal cases around Agent Orange, and Tricia Euvrard will talk about the current lawsuit in France. Susan Schnall will talk about the broad health effects of Agent Orange, and Paul Cox will briefly discuss the legislation on Agent Orange that U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee will soon introduce.
Panelist:
· Hoan Thi Tran: Born in Binh Tuan Province, Vietnam, without lower extremities and missing a hand, Hoan’s mother, a farmworker, was exposed to Agent Orange. Hoan is a graduate of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology with a certificate in computer science.
· Heather Bowser: Heather Bowser, Canfield, Ohio, is the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran. Heather is an Agent Orange activist who was born with multiple birth defects due to her father’s exposure to Agent Orange.
· Jonathan Moore is a senior partner in the New York law firm Beldock Levine & Hoffman. Moore represented the Vietnamese nationals and the Vietnam Association for the Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in a landmark case in the United States seeking to hold the chemical companies that manufactured and supplied Agent Orange and other poisonous herbicides to the US government during the Vietnam War liable for the harm created by their use. Jonathan is on the board of the Vietnam Agent Orange Relief and Responsibility Campaign.
· Tricia Euvrard: Tricia is a MA student in Gender Studies and Law at SOAS, University of London. She is a member of the Collectif Vietnam Dioxine based in France.
· Susan Schnall: Susan is a member of the core of the Vietnam Agent Orange Relief and Responsibility Campaign, President of the New York City chapter of Veterans For Peace, member of the Veterans For Peace Board of Directors, and lifetime member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War. For the past several years she has organized scientific panels for presentations about Agent Orange at the American Public Health Association annual meetings. Susan was dismissed from the US Navy in 1969 after a general court martial for anti-war activities.
· Paul Cox: Paul is a veteran of the American War on Vietnam and was in the Marines. Since his tour he has been active against that war and all wars. He has worked on one of the main legacies of the war, Agent Orange, since 2005, and has returned to Vietnam five times to educate himself and others about its lingering effects. He is a long-term member of Veterans For Peace and is currently on its national board. He is also on the board of Swords to Plowshares Veterans Rights Organization and is the president of Veterans Healthcare Policy Institute.

5. Thursday, 5:00pm (PT); 8:00pm (ET), Lifting Sanctions Amid COVID-19, with Hanieh Jodat and Leonardo Flores
RSVP to receive ZOOM link: https://act.rootsaction.org/…/web/common/public/signup…
The reality of U.S. led economic sanctions is the brunt of their effects are felt by regular people. This truth has proven itself time and time again, especially now, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of broad U.S. economic sanctions, countries such as Iran, Syria, Venezuela, North Korea, Sudan and Zimbabwe struggle without adequate food, electricity, medicine, medical supplies, masks or respirators. Those who suffer most under sanctions include pregnant women, children, and the chronically ill.
U.S. economic sanctions technically exempt humanitarian items — but banks, insurance companies, and other corporations are afraid that if they make loans, provide insurance for shipments or send goods the U.S. government will accuse them of violating the sanctions, levy hefty fines and place them on a banned business list.
Join RootsAction.org alongside President and Co-founder of Muslim Delegates & Allies and Director of PDA Middle East Alliances, Hanieh Jodat, and CODEPINK’s Leonardo Flores for a discussion and Q&A on the effects of U.S. led economic sanctions and how they are worsening the COVID-19 pandemic around the world.

ANSWER Coalition and Pivot to Peace will lead the National Demonstration Day walk to Union Square.
The alarming rise in hate crimes over the past year correlates to an increasingly hostile U.S. foreign policy towards China. The opportunistic scapegoating of China during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the intensity by which China is deemed the enemy and adversary of the United States, has driven a widespread Sinophobic sentiment nationally. The Asian American community suffers the brunt of the hatred fomented as a weapon of war. To date, there have been 3,800 self-reported hate crimes against Asian Americans.
The mainstream media’s failure to label the Atlanta shooting as a hate crime demonstrates the gross disregard and injustice that our communities are facing. Racism is a sick symptom of a system that profits from war and violence. And to put insult to injury, the cop handling the case was found to be promoting anti-China paraphernalia.
Hosts: ANSWER Coalition, Comfort Women Justice Coalition, Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Pivot to Peace

12. Sunday, 11:30am – 2:00pm, San Francisco Caravan: End the U.S. Blockade of Cuba!
Meet at:
1875 Marin St.
SF
For almost 60 years, Cuba has endured the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the U.S. government. During Trump’s term, he imposed more 220 measures to further cause harm to the island’s economy and the Cuban people.
In the midst of the COVID pandemic, Cuba has carried out a remarkable national policy of protecting its people, Cuban doctors have traveled worldwide to help save lives, and biotech and pharmaceutical scientists have developed a vaccine that is now in phase 3 testing.
At a time that international cooperation is urgently needed, the U.S. insists on maintaining the blockade.
Now is the time to mobilize on behalf of Cuba and tell Biden and Congress:
No Delay, Lift the Blockade Now!
Progressive Cubans in Miami initiated the monthly caravans, they have spread to New York City, Washington, DC, Los Angeles and Seattle. Join us on Sun. March 28 in San Francisco!
