| In a major step toward groundbreaking reform of California’s healthcare financing and delivery system, the State Assembly on Wednesday passed SB 770 by a vote of 47-15, followed by concurrence in the state Senate.Despite the insurance industry making SB 770 a top priority to kill, we prevailed! Thank you for all you did to make this possible. SB 770 now heads to Governor Newsom’s desk. His leadership in establishing and empowering the Healthy California for All Commission, which came up with the recommendations that SB 770 codified and built upon has been crucial. We look forward to continuing to work with Cal HHS to reach the goal of the equitable and affordable healthcare system all Californians deserve. The bill, authored by Senator Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and Mike McGuire D-Healdsburg, and sponsored by Healthy California Now, sets forth tangible steps on a concrete timeline to make California the first state to guarantee residents a standard set of comprehensive, high quality health benefits regardless of age, income, employment status, disability status, immigration status, or any other characteristic. The passage of SB 770 is a momentous achievement in our decades-long fight for a healthcare system that will provide better care at lower costs. We have worked hard to get this far; I can’t wait to celebrate with you and take the next steps toward guaranteed healthcare for everybody in California. Onward! Michael Lighty President |
