EVENTS / ACTIONS – Wednesday, April 3 – Sunday, April 7
1. Wednesday, April 3: San Francisco Vigil to Close Guantánamo!
6:00pm – 7:00pm
Crissy Field near the Warming Hut Park Store
SF
Please join Amnesty International, World Can’t Wait, and fellow human rights defenders around the world on Wednesday, April 3rd for the monthly Close Guantánamo Global Vigils. Tell President Biden to release the 16 men cleared for release, stop the ongoing Islamophobic human rights abuses and CLOSE GUANTÁNAMO NOW!!!
This month’s SF vigil is inspired by the artwork of Guantánamo detainees (https://www.artfromguantanamo.com/…/sz532akia9fr4adofp0…) and in observance of Ramadan. With orange jumpsuits (provided) on site and the Golden Gate Bridge providing a striking backdrop, we will photograph a tableau of resistance to the horrors of the torturous prison, once described by Irene Khan (former Amnesty Secretary General) as “the gulag of our times.”
If you can’t join or plan a vigil, please read Mansoor Adayfi’s Ramadan Mubarek Guantánamo https://www.aljazeera.com/…/19/ramadan-mubarak-guantanamo (from April 2023)
As a reminder, thirty Muslim men are still languishing at Guantánamo, most without charge, none having received a fair trial. Many detainees, like Toffiq al-Bihani and Khalid Qasim were brutally tortured by the U.S. government. Sixteen of the detainees (see attached posters), including al-Bihani and Qasim have been cleared for transfer for years, yet they remain detained indefinitely at the unfathomably expensive “forever prison”.

3. Friday, April 7, Revolutionary Friday: Stop ALL U.S. Funding & Weapons To Israel; End the Occupation of Palestine!
1:00pm – 2:00pm
San Francisco Federal Building
90 7th Street (Corner of Mission & 7th Sts.)
San Francisco, CA
More than 33,000+ Palestinians have died, this includes 14,000 + children since October 7th . 70% of the casualties are women and children.
Many countries have withdrawn their $$ support and weapons to Israel, many are also sanctioning Israel. Some have take cases of GENOCIDE against Israel, US and UK to the ICJ.
The US is doing token ‘air drops’ of supplies to Gaza but continues to send weapons and push for over more funds to Israel
– On March 22nd the US House of Representatives passed an appropriations bill which includes $3.3 Billion in U.S. military funding to Israel, and $500 Million in weapons….
Only 22 representatives voted against this. The bill was sent to US Senators
-On March 25, the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding a ‘ceasefire’. The U.S. abstained on the vote. In the meantime Israel continues to bomb raid hospitals and continues its carnage in Gaza.
We need to end this carnage by calling for a GENERAL STRIKE!! No Business as Usual!
Our elected federal officials, President Biden, Senators Padilla, Butler and Representative Pelosi, continue to vote and support Aid and Weapons to Israel. All are complicit in genocide.
All are welcomed to stand with the Revolutionary Workers Front, Aaron Bushnell Brigade, and Mothers On The March at the SF Federal Building to demand an end to the genocide, illegal and violent occupation and apartheid inflicted on Palestinians by the Zionist Israeli government by the federally elected officials.
WE CALL FOR:
– AN END TO ALL U.S. MILITARY AID AND WEAPONS TO ISRAEL
– AN END TO THE BLOCKADE OF PALESTINE
– A CEASEFIRE by the Zionist government Israel
– A GENERAL STRIKE
ViVa ViVa PALESTINA!
4. Friday, April 5pm, March for People’s Park
5:00pm – 7:00pm
Starts at Willard Park, ends at Sproul Plaza
Berkeley
Come out and join the Berkeley community in a march advocating for People’s Park to remain a green space! Show your support as we declare to the UC Regents that People’s Park is a cornerstone of Berkeley’s countercultural legacy and values.
The march will begin at 5pm on April 5th at Willard Park, and end at Sproul Plaza. Accessibility accommodations (vehicular transport) can be available upon contact (email info [at] peoplespark.org).
Reducing any piece of People’s Park is in direct violation of Berkeley’s Measure L, passed in 1986, which requires the Berkeley City Council to preserve and maintain the public parks and open space which exist in Berkeley, as well as to acquire and maintain public parks and open space in the census tracts and neighborhoods of Berkeley having less than the minimum amount of open space relative to population (2 acres per 1,000). Rather than reduce People’s Park, we need to increase parks and open space in this high density area, and we call on the University to cooperate and facilitate such expansion. Measure L noted “there exists a clear and present emergency in that the threatened loss of open space, parks and recreational opportunities in the neighborhoods in Berkeley will cause irreparable damage to the health and welfare of Berkeley residents.” This has escalated dramatically over the past 35 years, especially in light of the global climate crisis.
We also call on the University to honor the recognition of People’s Park as a nationally significant site, included on the National Register of Historic Places.
This protest unifies us in our plea against the commercialization of our park and demands that UC Berkeley opt for alternate locations for development, such as the numerous parking lots and vacant buildings that UC itself documented as potential sites for student housing – or perhaps the vacant chancellor’s mansion! People’s Park stands as a beacon of community empowerment, environmental stewardship, and social justice. To fight climate chaos, we need all the green space we can find.

5. Saturday, April 6, Haiti A Call to Action
1:00pm – 3:00pm
East Side Arts Alliance
2277 International Blvd
Oakland
Join Haiti Action Committee for this unique opportunity to hear direct from Haiti with leaders of Fanmi Lavalas, the people’s party of Haiti. Attend in person at East Side Arts Alliance in Oakland, or via livestream on youtube. Link in QR code or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-1QoZ095FQ.
As the crisis in Haiti continues to unfold, we urge you to join us on April 6th to hear from leaders of Fanmi Lavalas, the people’s party of Haiti. Twenty years after the US-orchestrated coup that overthrew the democratically elected government of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Haiti is at a critical juncture. In 2023, 5000 people were killed by paramilitary death squads and more than 300,000 people were displaced from their homes in the wake of terror, kidnappings and sexual violence. Nearly half the population is facing acute food insecurity. Schools and hospitals have shut down in the face of unrelenting violence, while the US continues to support a string of dictators and orchestrate a new foreign invasion.
In the face of repression and relentless terror that Haitians have called “hell on earth,” the Haitian people continue to defend their communities and to build new institutions, such as free clinics, cooperatives, and schools that embody a vision for a new, democratic and just Haiti. As the US and UN move forward with plans for a new foreign invasion, this time fronted by Kenyan police and other African and Caribbean nations, the Haitian popular movement, including Fanmi Lavalas, demands an end to foreign occupation once and for all. They are calling instead to replace the current dictatorship with a people’s transition government of “Sali Piblik” (public safety).
The time for solidarity is now. We call on all freedom-loving people to defend the right of Haiti’s people to live with dignity, free from foreign domination.
Featured speakers:
Dr. Maryse Narcisse and Joel Edouard “Pacha” Vorbe, members of the Fanmi Lavalas Executive Committee; Dr. Rama Ali Kased, US Palestinian Community Network, Assistant Professor of Race and Resistance Studies, San Francisco State University; Pierre Labossiere, co-founder Haiti Action Committee; Walter Turner, host of KPFA Africa Today, Board President of Global Exchange; Marvin X will read poetry accompanied on drums by Andrew Reynolds
