Briefly
Sumud (Arabic: صمود) means “steadfastness,” “resilience,” or “persistence”
The Global Sumud Flotilla is doing what governments have refused to do.
The flotilla ships are not made up of military ships nor is it carrying weapons, they are made up of civilians from all walks of life.
Some boats can only carry six people many are old fishing trawlers, rusty recreational yachts, all are secondhand. This is the equipment that they have for a 2,500 km voyage across the Mediterranean.
The flotilla is comprised of people from 44 countries and now approximately 45+ boats.
The flotilla is carrying humanitarian supplies like, baby formula, water, medicines, sanitary products, and food.
On August 31 – left Barcelona, Spain; now in the flotilla is in the ‘orange zone’ (high risk zone)
There have been many challenges from severe weather conditions, severely damaged boats that couldn’t continue, jammed communication lines, and drone attacks. All the participants on the flotilla remain committed whether by land or sea to break the siege on Gaza.
There have been threats by the Israeli government, that most likely will be carried out in a day or two in international waters (which are supposed to be safe waters)
The flotilla has support world wide – from Italian Dockworkers calling for a general strike and massive demos in Italy. In Tunisia, Spain, France and many other countries.
Clarification of countries protecting & aiding the flotilla
Spain is the only country that is currently offering support all the way to Gaza. The Spanish Navy Ship, Furor, is 10-12 nautical miles behind the flotilla and its role is to be available to assist the flotilla in case Israel attacks.
The Italian Navy’s frigate Alpino is currently following the flotilla but is scheduled to cease its escort on Tuesday, September 30th, after sending an alert to the flotilla’s vessels.
Greece stated that it will guarantee the safe sailing of boats currently in its waters, its foreign minister said on Thursday, adding that Athens had informed Israel that Greek citizens were in the flotilla. They will not be following the flotilla to Gaza.
Turkey helped evacuate activists aboard after one of the vessels broke down and began taking on water and also distributed additional humanitarian aid to the flotilla. Turkey will not be sending a navy ship to follow the flotilla to Gaza.
