For too long, the San Francisco Police Officers Association (the police union) has taken hardline stances and used inflammatory tactics that destroy trust between residents and police. It has blocked or delayed common-sense reforms—like the city’s improved use-of-force policy—and has publicly attacked police accountability champions—including elected officials, prominent athletes like Colin Kaepernick, and its own police members. Unlike other unions focused on wages and benefits and reasonable working conditions for their employees, the SFPOA has used labor law to exert an enormous influence on public policy and public safety.
Right now, the SFPOA is negotiating a new labor agreement with the city. The city must not approve a new contract increasing police officer pay and benefits unless the SFPOA agrees to respect our values and increase public safety. The SFPOA shouldn’t be allowed to use its bargaining power to make San Francisco less safe.
We are a growing and diverse coalition of San Franciscans who care deeply about police accountability and community safety. We want to ensure the present negotiations of the SFPOA’s new labor contract reflects our values and our community’s need for safety. To influence these negotiations, we must act now before the contract is finalized by June 2018.

“The SFPOA announced last night they had gathered enough signatures to qualify their taser measure for the June ballot.
They made this announcement at an event at the LGBT Center that they’d billed as a District 8 “community conversation about neighborhood crime and safety” but that was, in fact, designed by them as an opportunity to lobby an unsuspecting crowd about their taser ballot measure and their other pet political causes… (which included promotion of their endorsed candidate for District 8 Supervisor, the incumbent Jeff Sheehy; opposition to DA Gascon; vehement opposition to Prop 47 which was supported by 80% of SF voters in 2014; early promotion of another possible ballot measure to vastly increase the size of SFPD; and implicitly their current demands for another fat new contract).
They pretended the taser ballot measure was only about whether or not SFPD should get tasers and misled the crowd by claiming they would “work with the Police Commission” on a taser policy. After initially trying to block me from speaking (at an event touted as a “conversation”), I was able to challenge this part of their claim pointing out their measure would lock into law a policy standard so loose that they could use tasers on people who were not actively resisting and without fully trying de-escalation tactics first. They did not reply to this part of my remarks.
This is the second in their planned series of events like this in the various supervisor districts that they are co-sponsoring with their political front group SF Community Alliance for Jobs and Housing. This SFPOA propaganda road show is coming to your district soon. I encourage you to attend to alert your neighbors to the SFPOA’s lies about their taser ballot campaign.”
