In the Heat of the Night gained notoriety for its many breakthroughs. It was the first major Hollywood film to feature racism; it was the first to portray a Black male in a lead as highly smart and educated; and it was the first American to show a Black person strike a white person. This film along with his three films before made Poitier a bona fide star.
