Action to Stop Corporate Landlords and their Real Estate industry backers

April 13, 2017 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Jefferson Square Park
Gough St & Turk St
San Francisco, CA 94109

I wanted to invite you to an important action on Thursday April 13th which is part of a statewide week of actions hosted by  new statewide campaign coalition called Housing Now!, that includes local and statewide tenants groups, housing advocates, labor unions and others.

This coalition is calling on our legislators to take immediate action to combat displacement by eliminating barriers to strong renter protections (rent control and more), increasing funding for affordable housing, and reining-in Wall Street speculators that are buying up our neighborhoods.

What: Action to Stop Corporate Landlords and their Real Estate industry backers

When: Thursday, April 13th, 10:00 am

Where: Jefferson Square Park, corner of Turk & Gough

California has the highest rate of poverty in the country, at 22%, because of housing costs – forcing many to make impossible choices between paying for a home and food, a home and health. In many of our cities, the development of high-end housing and housing speculation has brought unprecedented displacement, hitting African American and Latino residents particularly hard.

We are calling on the state legislature to act now to:

  • PROTECT TENANTS: Repeal Costa Hawkins, expand Rent Control & Just Cause for Evictions, stop landlord harassment and unfair evictions.
  • STOP GREEDY CORPORATE SPECULATORS: Housing speculation is driving up rents and pushing folks out of their communities. This needs to stop!  In the meantime, let’s make sure it is taxed, to fund affordable housing!  We’re moving a bill to eliminate a huge real estate speculator tax break.
  • CREATE MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING: Tax speculators and put a fee on document filings to fund a state Affordable Housing Trust Fund! Stop rushing through luxury housing with no added affordable housing or benefits to the community.

Please let me know if you and/or others from your organization can join us!  I can be reached or (415) 713-6260

In solidarity,
