Thursday, June 22

1. Thursday, 12Noon – 1:30pm, KPFA: Get Ian Masters Off the Air!! Why Does KPFFA Have A CIA-Connected Programmer?

In person

KPFA
1929 MLK Blvd/University
Berkeley

BART: Downtown Berkley Station (about a 3 min. walk)

KPFA management unilaterally has put on disgraced Los Angeles KPFK programmer Ian Masters and his program called “Back Ground Briefing” Monday through Friday morning during drive time. He resigned from KPFK after telling the listeners that they should boycott Pacifica and not donate to the KPFK fund raising.

Many listeners in Los Angeles have protested for years that many of his “Background Briefing” guests are ex-CIA and FBI agents who are in support of US military operations around the world including in Syria, Iran and many other countries. His family is also connected to CIA officials including John H. Haller who ran the CIA covert operations to overthrow the Mosaddegh government in Iran. He also put on an ex-FBI agent who allegedly was running the Police Committee to keep Mumia Abu Jamal in prison.

When the present KPFA interim General Manager was asked at a KPFA Local Station Board meeting why Masters was chosen when there are many other good programs produced by Pacifica nationally he could not provide a valid answer.

Speakers on 6/22 will also report on the growing rightwing programming at the station including one sided NPR-type coverage about the war in the Ukraine and lack of evaluation of programs.

The station management and Local Station Board have refused to support the freedom of Julian Assange, Mumia Abu-Jamal and also refused to defend KPFA journalist Frank Sterling when he was attacked by the racist Antioch police. The Treasurer of the Board, Sharon Adams even defended the police in attacking and arresting Frank by reading at the meeting the pro-police version of the incident and the previous KPFA manager attempted to dodge the issue of supporting one of its own journalists by saying that KPFA was not a political party.

Is this “Free Speech” radio? Even the New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian and San Francisco Labor Council called for the freedom of Julian Assange.

The present Local Station board hasn’t evaluated the past manager in almost a decade and the present manager was just hired without an LSB convened search committee. This cronyism is not the way to run a community radio station.

4. Saturday, 10:30am – 12:30pm, No Radioactive Water Dumping in Pacific Ocean at Fukushima

In person

Berkeley Main Public Library Community Room 3rd Floor
2090 Kittredge St
Berkeley

Education & Action Meeting

Join The US Campaign to Protect California & The Pacific Rim From Radioactive Water Dumped From Fukushima By The Japanese Kishida government

The Japanese Kishida government is planning to dump over 1.3 million tons of radioactive water with Tritium into the Pacific ocean from the broke Fukushima nuclear reactors. Over 12 years ago the reactors melted down and they are still unable to remove the melted nuclear rods. They cool these rods with water that then becomes contaminated and now they want to dump all this contaminated water into the Pacific ocean threatening all countries on the Pacific rim.
The fisherman’s association of Fukushima are against this as well as many other people in Japan and around the world.

There are plans to get the Berkeley City Council to oppose this and a resolution will be introduced at an upcoming meeting. We will discuss this at this education and organizing meeting on July 24 and have speakers who want to expand this effort in Northern California and the state as a whole. We need to get other city councils, government bodies and all local, state and Federal elected officials to oppose this release of the radioactive water.

10. Monday, 1:00pm (PT), Perils of Warrantless Surveillance: The Case for Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Reform

Online registration: Webinar Registration – Zoom

The U.S. Constitution protects its people against unreasonable searches and seizures. However, under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), the U.S. government engages in mass, warrantless surveillance of phone calls, text messages, emails, and other electronic communications between Americans and foreigners. Information collected under this law without a warrant can be used to prosecute and imprison people, even for crimes that have nothing to do with national security.

Asian Americans, especially Chinese Americans and the immigrant and scientific communities, have been targeted for warrantless surveillance that led to wrongful and unjust prosecutions. The current authorization of Section 702 will expire on December 31, 2023. What should the Asian American and immigrant communities know about Section 702? If it is not sunset, what reforms will be needed? What are the next steps for the communities?

• Keynote speaker: Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the first South Asian American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives; a member of the House Judiciary Committee; Ranking Member of House Subcommittee on Immigration, Integrity, Security and Enforcement

11. Monday, 6:00pm, “It follows you every place you go”: The Aftermath of Guantánamo

Facebook online: “It follows you every place you go”: The Aftermath of Guantánamo | Facebook

You don’t have to be a subscriber to FB to view this on the site.

Guantánamo Bay prison. While the closure of the prison is a critical step, more will be needed to bring an end to this shameful chapter of torture and injustice. Indeed, Guantánamo and its legacy live on—in the lives of the more than 700 men who have been transferred out of the prison since it opened in 2002. While their situations may vary, it is clear that many men are struggling in different ways. The United States government has failed to take any meaningful steps to support these men or provide medical care and rehabilitation, leaving many Guantánamo survivors on their own to face a life of precarity, stigma, and despair.

On June 26, the UN Day in Support of Victims of Torture, join Muslim Counterpublics Lab, No More Guantanamos, Witness Against Torture, and the Center for Constitutional Rights in a virtual conversation with three Guantánamo survivors as they share their stories of life after detention, survival, and their quests for justice. We will also lift up the Guantanamo Survivors Fund and efforts to support men who have been released–and those who remain unjustly detained–so that their lives after Guantánamo are truly free.
