Death Penalty Petitions / Updates

10th Circuit Court of Appeals has issued a temporary STAY in the cases of #JuliusJones and #JohnGrant.

This is developing. Expect state to appeal to #SCOTUS, where anything can happen.

Lawyers in the case think it may come down to the wire again. The two men killed recently in Missouri and Alabama waited hours beyond their scheduled execution time before SCOTUS refused to stop the executions

Click on the names to sign the petitions

A note about John Grant. He has expressed deep remorse for his murder of Gay Carter. While nothing excuses that, we must understand that John is one of many death sentenced prisoners who fell through the cracks of state systems. He was only 12 when he entered state custody. Get the details here

Julius Jones is scheduled to be executed in Oklahoma on November 18, 2021, despite maintaining his innocence and compelling evidence that he was wrongfully convicted for the murder of Paul Howell in 1999. A commutation hearing was held on September 13th resulting in a favorable vote of 3-1 with one likely supporting vote abstaining. On September 28, Governor Stitt declined to act on the commutation recommendation

EVENTS

Wednesday, October 27

All events have happened – am leaving them in case there are recordings of the events

1. Wednesday, 3:00pm – 5:00pm, Hoodwinked in the Hothouse Part II: Frontline Voices of Indigenous Resistance beyond Climate False Solutions

Online register: ONLINE | Hoodwinked in the Hothouse Part II: Frontline Voices of Indigenous Resistance beyond Climate False Solutions (newschool.edu)

This panel was preceded by Hoodwinked in the Hothouse: Examining False Corporate Schemes being advanced through the Paris Agreement. The recording of this event is available here.

This panel features Indigenous organizers from frontline communities that are disproportionately impacted by false solutions to the climate crisis. From Mapuche communities in Chile, to Dine communities in Southwest Turtle Island, climate false solutions such as nuclear power, megadams, fracking, and many more continue to cause displacement and disaster in Indigenous communities worldwide.

Speakers will share stories from the frontlines about their efforts to stop the ongoing impacts of false climate solutions such as nuclear power and radioactive waste dumps, enhanced oil recovery for fracking in the Bakken Oil Shale, tree plantations & hydroelectric plants affecting Mapuche communities in Chile, and hydroelectric plants & mega dams built on the land of First Nations tribes in Quebec. We will also hear from a delegate of Minga Indígena, a collective & delegation of groups, organizations and communities from Indigenous nations throughout Abya Yala at upcoming COP 26.

Climate false solutions such as nuclear power, hydropower, biofuel, fracking and enhanced oil recovery, carbon offsets, carbon capture, biodiversity offsets, and nature based solutions are sold by corporations and NGOs alike as ways to combat climate change that also boost the economy. “Solutions” rooted in growth and profit will not solve the climate crisis and will continue to enact violence on the natural world and on frontline communities across the globe.

This panel will focus on Indigenous organizations that are contributing to movements for systemic change and climate justice, led by frontline communities and nurtured through processes of resistance, resurgence and decolonization

Speakers:
Kandi White, Indigenous Environmental Network
Leona Morgan, Diné No Nukes
Rubén Sánchez Curihentro, Observatorio Cuidadano
Lucien Wabanonik, Anishnabeg Tribe and Innu First Nations
Mindahi Bastida, Minga Indígena and The Fountain

Moderators: Shehla Arif, Engineering Social Justice and Peace; Gopal Dayaneni, Movement Generation: Justice and Ecology Project; & Leonardo Figueroa Helland, Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment.

Babu v. Ahern is a class action lawsuit (filed on behalf of all adults who are currently or will in the future be incarcerated in Alameda County Jail) claiming that the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) fails to provide adequate mental health care at Santa Rita Jail (SRJ). The lawsuit was filed in 2018 by the law firm Rosen Bien Galvan & Grunfeld, LLP (RBGG), who recently entered into a settlement with Alameda County.

THE SETTLEMENT IS UNACCEPTABLE AND PRIORITIZES FUNDING FOR THE SHERIFF, AND WILL NOT IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND OR WELL-BEING OF INCARCERATED PEOPLE AT SRJ.

But, in partnership with lawyers from the National Lawyers Guild and other partner organizations, you can file a legal objection as well as participate in actions to make your concerns known.

Revolution Books – Berkeley
2444 Durant Ave.
Berkeley

The Glasgow Conference Of Parties will meet from Oct. 31-Nov. 12, but they do not represent the billions of people now facing a bleak future, if they have a future at all; no.

The system of capitalism-imperialism has ravaged the earth, shredded crucial ecosystems, driven many species to extinction, and continues to inject massive quantities of carbon and other greenhouse gases into the air, driving the temperature of the atmosphere and oceans higher and higher. Storms, droughts, extreme heat and cold lash the planet, and there is a real danger of this system undermining the foundation of human biological existence on this planet. What is urgently needed is system change to deal with climate. Join this discussion.

Powell & Market St.
SF

the delta variant of COVID became the dominant strain worldwide, Cuba also suffered a significant spike in positive cases and deaths. But thanks to Cuba’s own vaccines and free, universal public health system, the island is coming out of the pandemic crisis.

By Nov. 15, 92% of the whole population will be fully vaccinated, with all children 2 years old and up also benefiting. Yet, this is precisely the reason that the U.S. government is threatening Cuba with more sanctions, and is funding right-wing, counterrevolutionary groups to try to recreate the chaos they attempted on July 11.

Monday, November 1

16. Monday, 4:00pm (PT); 7:00pm (ET), Dia de los Muertos Prayer Vigil: for those who died in ICE detention

Virtual vigil registration: Webinar Registration – Zoom

Since President Biden took office, five people have died in ICE custody.

Last year was the deadliest year in ICE detention since 2005. 21 people died in ICE detention, including eight from COVID.

People are losing their lives to a detention system that does not need to exist.

President Biden promised to end for-profit incarceration, including detention for undocumented immigrants, and to bring justice and fairness to the immigration system. Instead, we are seeing his administration increasing the use of immigration detention, filling private prison beds, and siding with private prison companies against communities fighting to close detention facilities. People are deprived of their liberty, separated from their loved ones, and excluded from their communities by institutions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) .
