Support for Medicare for All is surging, and its backers in Congress are preparing to move the bill forward if Democrats retake control of Congress.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the lead sponsor of the Medicare for All Act, just shared a new poll that shows support for a universal, government-run health system is at 94% with Democrats (up 4% from last year), 60% with independents, and even 55% in conservative-leaning battleground districts.
Rep. Jayapal plans to use this momentum to push for the first-ever markup of the Medicare for All Act — an important step a bill must go through on the way to becoming law.
But in order for that to happen next year, Democrats have to flip the House this November. That’s one reason we’re focused through our Nurses for Democracy program on providing critical support to candidates fighting for nurses’ values and guaranteed health care.
We’re hosting phonebanks to talk to voters in support of these candidates in key swing elections. Making calls is one of the most important actions we can take right now to grow our ranks of supporters in Congress and move Medicare for All forward.
Taking action now to help elect candidates that support Medicare for All will show that it is a popular and winning issue – especially when those candidates are running in competitive races to flip seats held by Republican incumbents. It will directly help bring about the moment when we can finally make guaranteed health care the law of the land.
