Community Dialogue: Management of Contaminated Soil

Dear friends,

Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice, and the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project, are co-hosting with the State Department of Toxic Substances Control an important meeting on Saturday December 2nd.

If your community has contaminated soil, or if you live near a landfill or incinerator, this discussion is important and hopefully can lead to improvements in DTSC policies and practices to better protect public health and improve environmental justice compliance by the government and dirty industries.

The “Community Dialogue: Management of Contaminated Soil” will be held Saturday, December 2nd from 10 am to 3 pm at the Greenlining Institute, 360 14th Street, 2nd floor, Oakland. soi

The dialogue will address the various aspects associated with decisions about the fate of contaminated soil, including its management, treatment, and disposal.

DTSC says the Community Dialogue is intended to:

* Clarify the basis for various community perspectives on how to best handle contaminated soil.

* Provide a greater understanding of the technical options for managing contaminated soil, and the potential benefits and drawbacks.he

* Develop guidelines for the role of communities in DTSC’s decision making processes associated with the fate of contaminated soil in their community.

Greenaction and the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project, and the communities we represent, have had very mixed experiences with DTSC on this issue, and we want to join with EJ communities to get DTSC to do a better job cleaning up toxic soil in communities and coming up with better, EJ-friendly solutions that protect the health of all impacted communities.
