CALIFORNIA

Here is the best news we have had for Californians needing health care in a long time. See this message and our rally in Sacramento below:

This message comes to us from Michael Lighty, member of PDA’s National Advisory Board and Director of Public Policy at California Nurses Association/National Nurses United.

“Reflecting new national momentum to guarantee healthcare as human right for everyone, an influential California state Senator, Ricardo Lara, introduced “Healthy California” today to establish a Medicare-type healthcare system in California.

Michael_cropped.jpegBacked by the PDA-supported Campaign for a Healthy California, sponsored by the California Nurses Association,  SB 562, states the intention of California to create a single-payer system. It will build on the coverage expansion of the ACA, as it guarantees healthcare with real cost controls, complete choice of provider, no deductibles or co-pays, and puts doctors and nurses rather than insurance companies in charge of healthcare. The bill will be finalized and full text released prior to the first policy committee later in the Spring.

For “Healthy California,” the timing is right. Senator Lara summed it up:

“Trump and the Republicans don’t get to pick the health care winners and losers. I grew up with people who were undocumented and would do everything to avoid going to the doctor. People in my community are sicker and they die younger. Kids miss school rather than go to the doctor.

Lack of health care is not just a problem for immigrant communities. It’s an issue in rural California. It’s a problem for young people across our state. We are turning that around in California – 185,000 undocumented children now have health care under Health 4 All Kids. But we’ll never get to 100% health care in California unless we lead.”

California will show the country how the Dream lives on.

Onward to healthcare justice!

Michael”

And now for our “to-do”!
