Born a slave but emancipated during the Civil War, Ida B. Wells works as an activist began in Chicago during a visit to the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 where she protested the exclusion of Afro-Americans from the event.
Returning to her home in Memphis she became co-owner and editor of the Free Speech and Headlight newspaper, she wrote scathing editorials on segregation, inequality, and lynchings in Jim Crow South becoming the first person to single handedly attack this issue. Burned out of Memphis, Ida B. Wells fled to Chicago where she continued her activism work and added suffragist and refugee work to her duties.
The film places Well’s life and legacy squarely in the context of today’s world illustrating how the battles that Wells fought in her lifetime are on-going and how today’s activist continue to draw inspiration from her work. After the screening there will be a discussion and Q&A.
