FBI, Director J. Edgar Hoover saw Rev. Martin Luther King, the charismatic and peace-loving champion of the African American Freedom Rights as a threat to the kind of American society he liked: with white men at the helm and in the documentary MLK/FBI by Director Sam Pollard, explores the investigation and harassment of Martin Luther King by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI to diminish the threat.
The film presents a strong visual of this mission based on newly discovered and declassified files along with archived materials such as news clips, television interviews, FBI promotional films and scenes from Hollywood movies accompanied by comments from various historians, writers and other figures of the time such as Hoover chronicler Beverly Gage, Attorney Clarence B. Jones and former SNCC Secretary Larry Rubin.
MLK/ FBI is a chronicle of how the FBI under the leadership of J. Edgar Hoover, followed, wire tapped, and bugged Rev. King in hope of ruining King’s reputation, destroying his life, discrediting the Civil Rights Movement and even blackmailing him to end his life.
Movement and even blackmailing him to end his life.
