FRENEMIES

Virtual Screening, Friday, June 17, 2022, 6:30pm

Set to the pulsating beats of Afro-Caribbean music the film Frenemies by filmmaker Mirela Martinelli presents an historical and contemporary context for understanding the sixty-year US Embargo against Cuba.

By blending 1950s archival footage with contemporary shots viewers get a glimpse of Cuba’s economic decay caused by the US Embargo of all exports except food and medicine. The film also presents a balanced portrait of Cuba life today and makes a compelling argument for why the US should lift the devastating 60 plus year embargo.

Despite some changes to the embargo through the decades economic isolation have exhausted the morale of Cubans who struggle to keep their island nation sovereignty.
