Join a non-violent direct action in Sacramento to insist that Governor Jerry Brown ban fracking and neighborhood drilling to protect our communities.
Californians have delivered well over 1 million petitions to Governor Brown calling on him to stand up to the oil industry, and held many rallies and press conferences. Health forums have explained the toxic effects of extreme oil and neighborhood drilling. Brown has received consistent reminders that the majority of Californians and the science DO NOT support fracking and neighborhood drilling.
Brown has never acknowledged these demands. Instead, he has cultivated close ties to big oil, taken money from industry, and cut oil industry-friendly deals around critical policies and regulations, while people continue to be exposed to known carcinogens in their own homes and as drilling expands.
Governor Jerry Brown wants to be remembered as a climate leader, but the reality is that he has already failed the test of real leadership. August 20 Californians will travel to Sacrament to take non-violent direct action to declare a day of reckoning and demand that Governor Brown stand up to big oil. They will insist that Brown
- stop issuing new permits for oil drilling in California
- commit our state to a managed decline of fossil fuel production
- beginning with 2,500 ft setback limits to protect frontline communities from toxic oil and gas drilling
- as part of a just and equitable transition away from fossil fuels.

Californians have done everything legally possible to show Gov. Jerry Brown that neither scientific data nor the majority of residents support fracking or neighborhood drilling in our state. But for years now, Gov. Brown has refused to listen. Instead, he has cultivated ties to Big Oil, taken money from the industry, brokered oil-friendly deals around critical policies and expanded drilling that exposes people to known carcinogens in their own homes.1 Now, activists are escalating the fight. This Monday, Aug. 20, environmental activists from across California will be sitting in to demand that Gov. Brown stands up to Big Oil. Join them in a nonviolent direct action that Gov. Obama to stop the Keystone XL pipeline by risking arrest at the White House and elsewhere.2 This will be a nonviolent direct action to insist that Gov. Brown stops issuing new permits for oil drilling in California and commits our state to a managed decline of fossil fuel production. That decline must begin with adequate safety perimeters that protect frontlines communities from toxic oil and gas drilling, proven to hurt human health.
For years, Gov. Brown has claimed to be an environmentalist while also supporting the oil industry. Just last year, he pushed through a flawed “cap and trade” climate bill that was partially written by the Western States Petroleum Association – the most powerful special-interest group in the state.3 He has demanded that state regulators fast-track permits for oil projects despite a federal order to crack down on egregious safety violations. When two state regulators refused to ignore that federal order, he fired them.4 It’s long past time for Gov. Brown to take real leadership on fossil fuels. And now that he’s retiring at the end of the year, this is his last chance to align his actions with his words. By sitting in and, for some, putting our bodies on the line, we can make sure that Brown hears the call for climate leadership loud and clear.
