1. Urgent Calls Needed: Haitian Brothers Deported & Separated
Names of brothers:
Vladimir Fardin, 9 y/o
Christian Laporte, 19 y/o
Call: Office of Refugee and Resettlement (ORR)
Tel: (202) 401-9246 or 1-800-203-7001
Sample Call Script to Office of Refugee and Resettlement (ORR):
Hello my name is and I’m calling to demand the release of 9-year-old Vladimir Fardin who was unjustly separated from his 19-year-old brother by CBP, when trying to enter the United States to visit their family. We ask that Vladimir be reunited with his mother in Haiti or his family in the U.S as soon as possible
Brief Description – See Article F
Info below is from Christelle an intern who is with the SF Public Defender and SF Rapid Response Network
@CBP @ICEgov separated the brothers based on minor technicalities and wouldn’t allow legal representation and wouldn’t allow them to speak with their family.
SF public defender intern Christelle, who works with @nikisolisSF, was supposed to pick up Christian and Vlad at SFO Saturday evening (January 16th) but they weren’t permitted to leave the airport. They were held at SFO for over 24 hours.
19 yr old student Christian Laporte had a valid F1 student visa, was enrolled at Diablo Valley College in Bay Area @DVC_updates and had legal representation. He only lacked an I-20 form=minor technicality.
He had previously traveled to the US on a visa with no problem. Immigration disallowed legal representation, took his visa & deported him to the Dominican Republic where he is not a citizen and doesn’t speak the language. He was deported late at night on January 19.
Border patrol took away 9 year old Vlad Fardin’s visa, claims he is no longer in lawful status, they can consider him an “unaccompanied minor.” and so he’s now subject to the Torture Victim Protection Act, requiring detention. He is at a shelter operated by @ICEgov in San Diego.
Vlad will likely be quarantined and kept in solitary confinement due to the Covid-19 pandemic

There is a war on journalism – Julian Assange is at the centre of that war. If this precedent is set then what happens to Assange can happen to any journalist.
“What Julian Assange is being targeted for is the same or similar as many journalists have done…it’s surprising to me that more people can’t see that this case has worrying implications for all journalists” – Alan Rusbridger former editor-in-chief of The Guardian
“Assange is charged with asking for information, with receiving information, and with publishing information. And I don’t mind saying that those are exactly the things that I do.” – Barton Gellman Pulitzer Prize and Emmy Award-winning journalist

8. Monday, 12Noon – 2:00pm, Car Caravan: Day of Action For Yemen
444 Spear St. (parking lot)
RSVP for route: CAR CARAVAN: DAY OF ACTION FOR YEMEN (BAY AREA) – Action Network
The war is only possible because Western countries — and the United States and Britain in particular — continue to arm Saudi Arabia and provide military, political and logistical support for the war.
The disaster in Yemen is man-made. It is caused by the war and blockade. It can be ended.
Over 115 organizations from the US, UK, Yemen, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, India, Italy, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and across the world, are coming together to call for an end to the war in Yemen and solidarity with the people of Yemen. We demand that right now our governments:
*Stop foreign aggression on Yemen
*Stop weapons and war support for Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates
*Lift the blockade on Yemen and open all land and seaports
*Restore and expand humanitarian aid for the people of Yemen.
We call on people around the Bay Area to join our car caravan protest against the war, just days after the U.S. presidential inauguration and the day before Saudi Arabia’s “Davos in the Desert” Future Investment Initiative.
Action is anchored by: YAC, Yemeni Freedom Council, AROC, DSA-SF, SF Bay Area Anti-War Network
