In the FY2021-23 budget, funding was provided to bring all rents in permanent supportive housing down to 30% of income. This fall, the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing fully implemented this.
However, for those who live in supportive housing funded by the Department of Public Health’s Behavioral Health Services division (specifically, the Midori and El Dorado hotels, plus numerous co-ops), these tenants have yet to see any relief, even though the funding is there. What’s worse, some tenants are paying upward of 70-80% of their incomes towards rents.
BHS Director Dr. Hillary Kunins has claimed that they are working on it, but there has been a lack of transparency from a department that blocks emails from people.
Join us on December 7 at 1pm near the Polk and Grove steps of the entrance to DPH (just south of City Hall), as we demand a concrete plan to immediately transition the rents of our neurodivergent and some of our most vulnerable traumatized neighbors to a 30% of income standard.
