EVENTS

Wednesday, January 11

1. Wednesday, 1:00pm – 2:30pm, Close Guantanamo/ Prosecute Yoo for Torture – Press Conference

In person

UC Berkeley Law School
Bancroft Way & College Ave.
Berkeley

Meet 12:45pm at Caffe Strada, Bancroft Way @ College Ave.

Proceed together at 1pm to the Law School across the street.

We have Yoo posters, orange jumpsuits & hoods, letter to deliver to Yoo and Law School Dean Chemerinsky, flyers for law school students. Picket, speakers, songs for Yoo (come sing!), join letter delivery asking Yoo to contribute to the Guantanamo Survivors’ Fund Give to the Guantanamo Survivors Fund | No More Guantanamos:

Professor John Yoo is “the man who famously butchered the U.S. Constitution in order to give the CIA the legal authority to conduct medieval torture.” He continues to teach at UC Berkeley Law School. He should be prosecuted for complicity in torture and imprisoned. He gave legal justification for torturing Muslim men turned over for bounty to the military for CIA torture at Abu Graib, black sites, and Guantanamo. We are calling for his prosecution. Torture is NEVER legal.

This action on the 21st anniversary of the opening of the prison at Guantánamo Bay will highlight Professor John Yoo’s complicity in U.S. torture and call for his prosecution. Yoo provided erroneous legal cover for the U.S. military and CIA to torture captured Muslim men, most of whom have never been charged with crimes, yet spent years at Guantanamo where they were treated inhumanely and tortured. There are less than 40 remaining prisoners. Professor Yoo should be prosecuted, not teaching law at our public university. We’ve invited Berkeley Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky to speak. In 2014 Chemerinsky, then Dean of UC Irvine Law School, said in “Nation” magazine and in a KPFK interview that Yoo should be criminally prosecuted: “I think he [John Yoo] should be,” Chemerinsky said. “All who planned, all who implemented, all who carried out the torture should be criminally prosecuted. How else do we as a society express our outrage? How else do we deter it in the future, except by criminal prosecutions?”

Host: CodePink Endorsers: Berkeley No More Guantanamos, Progressive Democrats of America Oakland, Triple Justice, Extinction Rebellion Peace.

Schedule of events & RSVP: 9th Annual Weekend & March to Reclaim MLK’s Radical Legacy (actionnetwork.org)

On January 13-15, 2023 we will host a weekend of (online and offline) teach-ins, trainings, film screenings, healing justice workshops, and actions in King’s honor, and we will end with a caravan and march on MLK Day.

Join us to recommit to the path of revolution and liberation laid out for us by Dr. King and the long lineage of Black freedom fighters who came before us. Not the white-washed, sanitized version of King that the US capitalist state has co-opted and sold back to us, but rather the radical, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist revolutionary who called for an all out war against poverty

Dr. King’s legacy of radical direct action teaches us that real change comes from the people. And it’s going to take all of us coming together more united in struggle and liberation.

This will be the second in-person hearing on this case since DA Jenkins became the DA.

Before the recall of DA Chesa Boudin the case was already in the Superior Court system with many hearings in Dept. 9 and in Dept. 20, since January. This case was thoroughly investigated by Boudin’s office before charges were brought on SFPD’s Kenneth Cha. There were stall tactics used by Cha’s attorney (Police Officers Association) before the recall election.

Solidarity Action

On December 7, a US supported coup took place in Peru that the US was intimately involved in. The right and the media attacked Castillo’s government and were building day by day the viability of the parliamentary coup d’état that ended up
taking place on December 7.

Also, on the eve of the coup, U.S. Ambassador Lisa Kenna met with Defense Minister Gustavo Bobbio, who, like Córdova, resigned on December 7. According to the Lima newspaper, the last phone call Castillo took before leaving the presidential palace came from the U.S. embassy. The Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, had blessed the coup and recognized Boluarte.

It was also the United States who was behind the appointment of the new head of the National Intelligence Directorate, retired Colonel Juan Carlos Liendo O’Connor, former liaison officer in the Pentagon’s Southern Command, closely linked to the dictatorship of Alberto

Fujimori and his alter ego, Vladimiro Montesinos, both imprisoned for crimes against humanity” . Liendo guarantees the ongoing repression and militarization in Peru.
A large part of Peru is now militarized and in a state of emergency to crush the working people and poor. Tanks, together with groups of soldiers and assault police, patrol the streets daily, seeking to intimidate the protesters and the people who come out to join them. The regime has even started labeling protesters “terrorists,”.

The newly US supported puppet President Dina Boluarte has been responsible for murder of youth, workers and indiginous people. She has also jailed the real former president Pedro Castillo

We demand an end to US intervention and the removal of the coupsters and their prosecution for the coup and the murders of more than 20 youth and people of Peru in their illegal seizure of power.

The people and workers of Peru have a right to their own self government without US imperialist intervention. This also follows the US supported coup in Bolivia on November 19, 2019. That coup was also supported by Trump and Tesla Twitter billionaire Elon Musk who wanted the lithium which is an important resouce of Boliva. Peru as well has important deposits of copper, iron, lead, zinc, bismuth, phosphates, manganese and lithium.

The role of both the Democrats and Republicans is to continue the coups and looting of Latin America. This is also the 50th anniversary of the US supported coup in Chile in 1973. This coup was also supported by the AFL-CIO bureaucrats and the AIFLD. Today the AFL-CIO through the NED funded “Solidarity Center” with $75 milllion is still supporting coups in
Venezuela and around the world.

No More US Supported Coups in Chile, Latin America and the World.

action on January 14 is in conjunction with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend to honor his true anti-war legacy.

Honoring Dr. King in a meaningful way means to build an ever stronger movement for peace and against social and economic injustice. This must include using society’s vast resources to fund healthcare, housing, education and to save the environment – rather than the bloated war machine.

11. Saturday, 6:00pm – 8:00pm, Film Screening:The Circle, banned in Iran, directed by Afar Panahi, imprisoned in Iran

In person

Revolution Books Berkeley
2444 Durant Ave.
Berkeley

This fi showing is a benefit for Revolution Books as part of a fund drive to raise $5,000 by mid-February.

The Circle weaves together the tales and struggle of multiple women over the course of a single day and night in Tehran.

Stay for a discussion on the film, the current uprising, the responsibility of people here at this moment, and the potential of a real revolution in Iran.

Director Jahar Panahi has been arrested multiple times and in 2010 was convicted of “assembly and colluding with the intention to commit crimes against the country’s national security and propaganda against the Islamic Republic.” He was sentenced to 6 years in prison and banned for 20 years from making or directing any movies. But he continued to direct while under house arrest. In July ’22, he was arrested again and is now in prison.
Revolution Books supports the courageous uprising in Iran sparked by the murder of Mahsa Amini for wearing an “improper hijab.” For over 3 months, thousands of people throughout Iran have taken to the streets defying the government’s increasing repression.

13. Tuesday, 4:00pm, Health Commission Meeting – Laguna Honda Hospital

Remote meeting only:

To testify: Call  415-655-0001 (Access Code from meeting’s agenda), # #. Raise your hand (*3 on the phone) as soon as our item is called!

To supply written testimony for the record: Email Your 150-word statement to mark.morewitz@sfdph.org —specify the date, agenda number, and that you want your testimony in the minutes. You may both testify and supply a written statement.  See example of a  statement.

Update: as of the January 10, 2023 Health Commission/Laguna Honda Joint Conference Committee Meeting, the Federal CMS has NOT given a postponement on restarting deadly discharges and LHH closure on February 2, 2023. The City Attorney is in the process of reviewing and sending a letter to higher government authorities requesting a reprieve. How can you fix a facility full of vulnerable people by closing it? Speak out to stop this cruel and dangerous exercise!

Background: As of this writing, DPH says closure and deadly discharges will resume February 2, 2023. The cut of 120 badly needed nursing home beds is still on the table. The October 12 LHH Settlement stipulates that closure and discharges could be postponed if the Settlement requirements are adhered to. But what are they? So far, SFDPH is keeping federally required plans and documents secret, including its Revised Closure Plan, its Root Cause Analysis, and its Action Plan, pending CMS approval. All discussion has been done in Closed Session by the Health Commission – excluding the public.  Read more here.

We demand, on behalf of all San Franciscans: No secrecy, No closure, no discharges, No bed reduction!  You can’t open a hospital by closing it!
